In Praise of the Eris

This past weekend I took a trip to Duluth MN to see the tall ships that were on display there. Since I'm not very familiar with Duluth I used the Eris to navigate to the hotel, find restaurants, find gas stations, and to keep up with email along the way. Since there is a lot of carping about the Eris here I thought I would just chime-in with a positive story for a change.

The Eris worked just great for me the entire weekend and it proved to be a really valuable tool. I'm in my 50's and at my age the Eris -- and all smart phones for that matter -- is simply amazing. When I was a kid I could only dream of the things that the Eris does for real today. Even my wife, who is not into technology at all, was impressed by the Eris. It got us where we wanted to go quickly and hassle free.

There are faster and more powerful smart phones out there now but the Eris still brings a lot of value to the table. It would be tough to live without a smart phone after the having Eris for 6 months.

Ted, just got back from a trip to California in the motorhome for 3 weeks, kids used it to play games, stay in touch with face book, wife used it to tether to her laptop for email and sales while on the road and I used it for Google Maps. Oh ya and we also used it for a phone...even with the issues reported here it still one of the best bangs for a buck (or 99) you can get.

Ted, I know exactly what you are saying. I am in my 60s and Eris is my 1st smartphone and I already rooted it (thanks due to a number of smart guys here)
I am involved in research and computers so for me it is a bit less of a thrill. At my work I see also the other side of this technological revolution: when I walk in to an office everybody is sitting in their cubicle and stares into the computer screen. Much less human-to-human contact.
Maybe its just me,,,

One thing for sure: this thing is pretty addictive. Last week on the way to work I realized that I left the phone at home. I turned aroud.
Before the time of cell phones no one cared to be on contact 100% of the time

You are absolutely right.
i'm in my mid 20's and i believe people are too demanding of their smart phones.
not long ago cell phone's greatest feature used to be a camera, or an mp3 player. Today, if a GPS on the phone doesn't get a lock on location in less than 2 seconds in an underground parking lot, people get upset with their phone call it 'crap' and start looking for a newer, stronger and faster device.

Think if you could go back in time 5 years and tell your past self you are going to use a touch-screen phone with fast internet connection using maps etc, past you would have been thrilled!
My point is, let's all appreciate what we have and enjoy it!

try using in a city, it SUCK. I live on a one way street, and it shows that it's one way and tells you to go down the wrong way.

Happens with all one way streets
Yup, Google navigation falls short of perfection... but it's still awfully darn good. It certainly beats having your passenger try to navigate using a giant accordion fold map with minuscule printing and half the streets missing. In my opinion Google navigation is still knock-your-socks-off impressive and I'm sure they are working to fix the very problem that you have identified.

When I went to Florida back in June, as soon as I got off the plane I needed a pop something bad, so I took my phone out of Airplane mode and hit Voice search... said "find seven eleven" and within seconds I directions to the 5 nearest 7-11's.. grabbed the closest and got turn by turn directions..

yeah.. love my Eris!!

My sentiments exactly!! The most imaginative people 500 years ago could not imagine living the way we do now. 500 years ago people could only dream of talking with someone 20 miles away, looking down at the ground from 35,000 feet, surviving colds and infections, or even war being abnormal.

Count your blessings every time you get frustrated with what you're going through.
