Just out of curiousity, if/when Sprint/HTC fixes the stock messages application, will everyone use it or stay with Handcent/Chomp? What are the advantages of using the stock messages application? I almost immediately downloaded Handcent after reading all the temporary fixes. So I am not aware of the advantages of it.

I actually like the stock app better. Only advantage I see is that a message preview appears on the lock screen instead of handcent's pop-up box. I have the pop-up box off. Didn't like it to much.

I agree, I dislike the pop-up box on the Handcent. I forgot the stock app had the preview on the lock screen. I knew I was missing something, I just couldn't put my finger on it.

What i don't understand is all this fix for the stock message app. Mine is 96% awake and this badboy has been running since Wednesday morning with gtalk and push gmail running all the time and i have enough battery to last till let say 5 or 6pm. The question i have are the people complaining about battery life just blaming the messaging or should be blaming themselves for loving the phone soo much they can't stop touching it. My theory goes like this and follow me. The person who found this probably did not have anything running like push gmail, facebook, bad coverage or anything that needs to run, doesn't the phone need to be awake to do all these background data. You hear some people say it works like a charm but what are there settings, background apps, and daily use of it. I know i am not the only one who thinks the messaging app problems makes no sense. So if your one of them person who do not use push gmail or just use the net whenever then turn off mobile data on all the time. This will save you lots battery but again only if you don't use any kind of apps that need to be updated LIVE.

I hated the slideshow the stock messaging app had for pictures...although I didn't search the settings to see if I could change that...

chomp is nice, but I want to be able to view the pictures...if you hold your finger over the picture in the message thread, it asks you if you want to "view picture" ...does this work for anyone else? I hope it supports that function soon...

While I agree with you, for the most part, I do have an issue with the logic.

First off, I, personally, believe that a good majority of the issues being reported on these forums are the cause of constant tinkering and looking too deeply into things by the user. It appears to be stemming from a vast majority of users coming over from Windows Mobile. Android is a completely new OS, based off of a totally different platform. It doesn't work like WinMo (thank God!!), and therefore, doesn't have the same issues/solutions that WinMo has. I can't even begin to count how many threads mention Task Killers/Managers. The simple fact is, the OS manages memory, so the use of a Task Killer/Manager is really not required, and is most likely causing more harm than good.

The bottom line is, most of us are probably a little too knowlegable for our own good (or at least we think we are) and when something appears "odd" on the device, we tend to blow it out of proportion and thanks to the "placebo effect", create an issue out of nothing.

Another interesting thing about this OS is the amount of customization that can be done. Not only visually, but operationally as well. You are right, one user's set up is going to differ greatly from anothers. and with all the "stuff" that can be running, there is bound to be something that is causing the issue at hand (whether it be battery drain, laggieness, etc).

All that being said, the battery issue with the stock messaging application is not a "theory", but an acutal software bug acknowleged by both HTC and Sprint.

I have not had any issues with my mms at all. I do have a problem tho that I took some pics with my 5mp camera on the phone and tried to send as a pic mail and realized that its to big of file to send... what BS...and seriously Sprint if I get a pic mail from Verizon that has any type of animation it still doesnt play... come on thats alittle old now...

It's important to remember that some other apps rely on the default SMS/MMS app for outbound communication. GeoBeagle is one which immediately comes to mind, but I've seen others. Anyway, these apps won't use Handcent or Chomp or any program except the default Android messaging app so it's wise to keep it installed and have it working correctly.

Is there a way to use Google Voice as the sole SMS/MMS app? I can send just fine but I still receive messages on the default app (currently Handcent). I understand I can turn that off but will GV receive and send SMS/MMS messages in real time and notify me just like Handcent/Chomp/Stock?

Basically, can it be used as a realtime standalone SMS client? If so, is there a battery hit?

after using Handcent before update, I thought that Ill stick to stock msging app after update cuz I cared more about speed, but then I noticed it was running kinda slow and laggy compared to Handcent, plus I missed my custom black background and all other cool customizations in Handcent, so for now Im back to Handcent and staying with it.

to those who never tried it, TRY IT!! I think Handcent is the best sms app.

oh, and picture sms works fine in it (better than stock), but i havent tried to send/receive video sms

I too decided today that I had enough with the stock app. It isn't bad, it is just handcent is that much better.

On sending pictures in Handcent, I noticed that it compresses the pictures. This is actually pretty cool, but it seems to be compressing them too much and the quality is degrading more than I'd like (from a 1 MB file to 15 KB).

Is there anyway to do something in Handcent? I know I could just change the camera settings, but I like that being higher quality.

Thanks in advance.

I prefer stock SMS app more then both Chomp/Handcent
the reason why i dont like using either(i've used both and now im using the stock app)is that i am a heavy txting addict and i use the phone a lot while txting(example; txting and on the web, or talking and txting), so sometimes when im muti-tasking like crazy the messages dont show up! At all, even after rebooting the phone. i found out that both Chomp/Handcent does this, so its soo annoying, i believe theres 3 issues that cause this.............Heros long history of SMS problems(remember everyone!)...............sprints long history of SMS problems(yess sprint has SMS problems and Data problems)...............or third, its the 3rd party apps, maybe they cant send it to you when you use the phone in such high demand(eg:surfing the web and txting almost all the time, or simotaniously(i think i spelled it right?))
all i know is the problem happened a while ago and i really noticed it yesterday and today a lot!
i was talking to a girl and i told her i sent her a message(always happens)and she says she never got it?
and this gets annoying fast!
so idk if its Heros fault, Sprints fault, or the 3rd parties fault to work in such high demand while having the low speed of its processor(Sprint Hero 528MHZ), or such low ROM.
i would love to hear what people think, and also if i should just make a new tread about this?
What do you guys think?!

I wish my stock was fast. It seems so slow from after I type my message and hit send to it actually sending. The screen dims and the "Please Wait" with the circle going around comes up and it does that for like 5 secs and then the screen comes back but the message still takes another 4 secs to send. On Handcent and Chomp, it seems to take only 4 secs to send after hitting send.

Are there some settings I'm missing on the stock app that is making it run slower?? Would love some help.
