Odd attitude by ATT over Captivate GPS problems.

OK, I purchased a Captivate Fri and shortly found that I too have problems with GPS. So I spent time on the phone with tech support this weekend and they acknowledge that a general GPS problem seems to exist. However, she would only talk about GPS in the context of use with ATT Nav. And insisted that A-GPS was the solution. Today I spoke with the store where I purchased the phone. They tell me that GPS is a only part of how you locate where you are is considered an acceptable answer to our problem. He stressed that using A-GPS was the answer to the problem at hand. This after the "clerk" spoke to his superiors on the phone. Also, he told me they is no official acknowledgment by ATT that a problem even exist.

I'm not feeling too good about where this is headed. Two things: a) There is a problem and they don't want to own up to it. b) ATT is scared to death, understandably, of supporting Androids and the many apps and combination's of apps and phones.

Looks like I will be returning the Captivate and getting something else which is sad as other than GPS I like the phone.

why do people always assume AT&T is always hiding something or trying to screw you over?

AT&T is not samsung. Samsung handles Samsung tech support. AT&T handles AT&T tech support.

Apple handles Iphone tech support

ETC

Something to do with the words they use, the manner in which they deal with you after the fact. Those type of data points make a big difference,
to me at any rate. I can't fathom treating one of my customers the way
I've been treated. What the heck is wrong with directness? Why all the
"misdirection" when I speak to them? Each and everytime I was told it was me with the problem not the phone. And don't you think it is reasonable to expect an Android phone to work with GPS? The tech support lady told me that the GPS would only EVER work with ATT Nav! And she implied I was unreasonable to think otherwise.

Do you think it is reasonable for them to tell me I can't expect GPS to work in a phone as acceptable?

You mean like killing off Unlimited Data June 7, and then when you start the AT&T Radio app on the captivate, released July 18, it says AT&T STRONGLY recommends you subscribe to an unlimited data package? Which no longer exists?

Something like that?

I've definately found that the ATT reps now little about the android phones. They're just not used to them. Till now they haven't had anything really worthwhile. They know the IPhone in and out because that's been their bread and butter for years.

I'm not suprised they don't say much regarding GPS, because they simply don't know anything about it.

Just like the rep who helped me out told me that the Captivate doesn't support turn by turn directions without paying for at&t navigate. I told her otherwise.

I purchased a Captivate to find the same GPS issue everyone is talking about. After applying "fixes" posted on forums and not having much luck, I went back to ATT yesterday and exchanged my phone. The new one locked onto the GPS right away. I then tested it multiple times in different locations throughout the day. So far it works pretty well. Takes a small amount of time to lock, but it locked every time.
I will tell you that ATT employees dont say anything about this issue. They state that they have never heard of it. I got this answer at 3 different stores. Also, most ATT sales reps have little to no experience with this phone. I had to walk the rep through all sorts of settings when I got my new phone. This is fine cause its a newer phone and im sure they dont get a free sample of each one to play with.
So for now, I have a decently working GPS without having to modify any settings. If your phone does not lock at all, even outdoors on a clear day, take it back! They will exchange it within 30 days and this may help you as it has helped me. Plus they gave me an extra set of headphones and 1000 rollover minutes. Just act a bit upset about it and they throw free stuff at you!

It will stop working. I'm on my second captivate (other issue than gps), and the gps worked fine for almost a week on this one. Yesterday, take a trip to tampa and couldn't get a lock on a sunny day with me trying constantly throughout the day.

We haven't been told anything by corporate att of any issues. I think I might be ther only rep in the country that carries an android device. Other reps in the store are always coming to me with questions :)

They have a fix coming out next month to fix the GPS issue, so sit tight.

Thank you for the update. Some of us will patiently wait for GPS and Froyo. Patience does have an end. A real target date, will settle the masses...bring it on Samsung. cheaha bill

i just don't really understand one thing
why people who exchange the captivate or sell it or trow it on the trash feel the need to come here and share that?
if I'm done with a product i move on and never look back
this guys come here to whine about it they really think we care?
Well, it's good to know that people do exchange their Captivates and get back better phones so that current users realize that the problem is only with some units, and that exchanging might help rather than just selling it off. As for people who sell it off, I think it's more of warning thing to those thinking about buying the phone. I actually got a lot out of the "Taking Cappy Back" threads and the "I exchanged three times and fixed my problems" thread.
