Im locked to T-mobile and i dont want to wait to get some ruined t-mobile version of Froyo!!

Correct! Unlocking your phone only lets you use any SIM. Problems will occur if you try and install the OTA 2.2 when you have the T-Mobile ROM on your phone.

@Bearo - Unlocking/debranding your network-locked phone does NOT make it a factory unbranded phone. Only factory unbranded phones that have never been locked to a network can take the current OTA update. The original network-branded firmware is still on your phone after you unlock/debrand it, so the update won't work unless it comes from your network provider.

Ok cheers. Well if t-mobile put out a s**t version of froyo then i guess rooting would be the only course of action?

Rooting is an option, although the networks tend to add their own branded apps and game demos rather than alter the basic Android software. There's no reason to suspect that the TMobile FroYo won't work properly, even with their own network-branded add-ons.

Their unlocked/debranded phones came direct from HTC through a retailer like Carphone Warehouse rather than from Orange or Vodafone. The HTC version has no network branding and the Android firmware is the plain HTC issue. The current 2.2 update replaces the unbranded HTC firmware.

yes, but what stops you from taking an orange branded desire, use a goldcard, flash on the generic htc RUU, and then receive the OTA update. the servers wouldn't realise if the software number has been altered or not as long as its the stock htc RUU, would it?

That may work, I don't know much about using goldcards to change the ROM. The original discussion was about a branded phone that is simply unlocked/unbranded.
