Is this the right choice for a non-power Blackberry user?

I am fed up with my non-receptive, battery draining, slow and buggy Tour and plan on upgrading to an Android device whenever I can. I like the Hero the most because I don't like the Moment and Intercept, and the EVO seems unnecessary for what I want: a great Android phone that is good enough to run good software and a whole lot of mobile browsing. Is the Hero right for me? I have played with one a multitude of times and love it, and can only imagine how awesome it would be with CM6. The only thing that worries me is that it'll be a year-old device in a few months. Is this fear rational? Thanks!

Likely, but it could be a combination of firmware and very slight differences in hardware.

I'm rooted and running Fresh with no problem. My only real complaints are the size of the screen (wife just got an Evo) and that the battery life could be a bit better (but it lasts all day with moderate use).

I'm interested in Fresh, how similar is it to Sense? Is it worth it to switch to it over Sense?

Hero is a great device and its done a good job for the 10 months that I've had it. No real complaints and a great android experience (after rooting and running thru a couple of Fresh's ROMs of course). The Hero is a great device and if your really feel like its the device for you being near a year old go for it.

But personally I'd try not to use my upgrade for it and find it cheap online for it. That way you can save your upgrade for perhaps a newer Android device that you might find interested enough in upgrading to.

No, there aren't, at least not for what I want as explained in the first post. Not a superphone, an something non-junky.

If you read in the forum, they are coming out in Mid August with the Samsung Epic, and also we are told they are also coming out soon with the Hero 2, in either way there are other phones but not with Android OS but they do have other options, but either way my point is , the Hero has reached it's upgrade performance, so by the time you get into the Hero you will have already been outdated, which is true for most phones but the Hero has been out for a year now, and has already been through a major upgrade which has been causing issues for many but not all, but rooting is an option if you choose to do so like you mentioned, but it is still a year old phone which was my point, good luck
