Android 2.2 Bluetooth Voice Dial (No Verification?)

I updated my EVO 4G last night to Android 2.2. I started using the bluetooth voice dial feature this morning and I must say the new feature is still incomplete. There is no verification prompt after telling the phone who you want to call. You could say "Call Robin Cell" and it will dial Rob Cell without prompting you for verification. This means you have to scramble to grab the damn phone and hang up before it makes a connection with the wrong person. The lack of a hands free verification feature totally negates Android 2.2 bluetooth voice dial. Someone was asleep at the wheel with this one.

Microsoft Voice Command still has my respect in this regard no doubt. All it needs to do is repeat the name it is about to dial by saying (Prompt: "Call Robin at Cell" Answer: "Yes" or "No"). Why would they not do their homework on something like this and atleast listen to how Microsoft Voice Command works? If they think there bluetooth voice dialing is flawless thats fine, but they still need to include the option for verification.

It's probably still in its infancy. The lack of verification made me stop using voice command all together. You and I are coming from WinMO, where a LOT of features could be had (and were complete, for the most part), so I guess we have to lower our expectations a bit (for the time being). Who knows what 3.0 will bring! :D

The voice dialer still sucks loads of ass. It's the one thing I miss about Winmo. In fact, it's the one thing that Android doesn't completely destroy Winmo on.

I say "call wife" and it Googles the phrase "call wife". Really? This is the best Google can do?

And yes, without voice based confirmation, the whole thing is useless anyway.

OK I'm going to show my ignorance and ask how do you setup BT voice command? I've just updated to a rooted version of 2.2 and may have a problem on my end but I've looked everywhere and can't figure out how to activate it or set it up. Also it sounds like the callfilter app must be the verification function everyone is looking for. . . . . unless that's a third party app?

I just pushed the button on my headset and the voice command prompt came up.

Call Filter is a 3rd party app. I love it because it blocks unknown/private calls and you can insert any phone number you want it to block.

Has anyone figured out how to get music over BT yet?

Ok so today was the first time I got a chance to test out the bt voice dial and 6 times in a row it worked surprisingly well every time. Unlike some others it did have confirmation and verification for contacts with multiple numbers with no errors. The only thing that was kind of creepy is the super computerized sounding voice. Needs a little polishing but I'm real happy it's there.

I noticed this last night too. Basically unusable. The only thing that saved me from calling all kinds of wrong people is the CallFilter app. It has a setting in there to confirm you want to call that person.

I don't understand why people claim this to be unusable. Speak clearly, listen for the confirmation, and if the device confirms the wrong number, press the disconnect button on the BT and try again. Mine works perfectly, exactly the same as my now dusty HTC Mogul.

As for the Call Filter App, it negates any advantage of Bluetooth voice dialing as you need to handle and focus on your phone to confirm/send the call. So much for hands-free dialing while driving.

For those who's phones are calling Rob when prompted to call Robin, may I suggest a better Bluetooth device or a speech therapist.

For those that think the Android implementation of voice command is good obviously never used voice command on a WinMob phone. Verification is not having to scramble to disconnect a mis-dialed number after the fact. Verification is the system asking before dialing the number. No matter how good your BT is or how clearly you speak you will be misread at times and having to hangup and start the process all over again is not a good solution.

But it can get exhausting always having to "confirm" that you really want to call the person. Maybe it's a design choice in that Google assumes you will get it right more often than you will get it wrong. If you always use bad pronunciation or are always in a noisy environment, then I guess you'd prefer to get a confirmation every single time.

But I prefer being free from required confirmations on every single call, and I'd rather put up with having to scramble to cancel a miscall because it rarely happens.

Ideally, we'd have the choice to configure it as we'd like. Choice is good.

Well its not so much that it's better or worse than winmo, for me it's more it's more about coming from a pre that had no voicedialing it's a
blessing.

Haven't tried this with my bt yet. But HT
C's voice command is the WORST I've ever seen. I first had a Hero which I got replaced after seeing the voice command came NOWHERE CLOSE to what I said. The replacement had the same problem so I then spoke to someone at HTC. That rep had a Hero in hand and saw what I was talking about. So he assured me it'll be fixed in the update. Never did get fixed. I now got the Evo and same exact problem. Example: I say "call Chris" and I get "call 999-500-9999 or "call Sabrina" . Every other phone I've had with voice command worked flawlessly.

i use a jawbone prime and i simply cannot hear the voice asking me what i want. i can hear a very slight muffle but the volume is WAY too low. i also always need to pump up my BT volume when I starting using it even in regular calls. it seems the BT volume always defaults back lower even if toggle it higher during a call. is there a way to adjust the default BT volume...perhaps this would fix the "voice control too soft" issue for me.

I was a little worried about no verification because the voice dialer app has been absolutely horrible for me, requiring repeat commands before it ends "listening mode" and still getting things wrong more than half the time. Not sure why that is when voice search in Google in the same device has such great recognition.

I did the 2.2 update today though, and was very pleasantly surprised. Using a Jawbone Icon, it's been getting almost everything right so far. I agree with the previous poster that the voice could use some work though. :)

I wouldnt want it to ask me but at least a beep and then it repeating back to me would be ideal.

You just need a headset that supports that bluetooth protocol. I use the Motorola S9HD headset. They work well for me but just a note (it seems to be an issue with all headsets) if you use them for running you might want to do your own sealing. I killed one set when sweat got in it (well, it worked but the buttons would go haywire, raising the volume randomly).

I returned that set and the second set I sealed up and they have been working well since.

This is another thing WM does better then Android then, sadly. When I had music playing to test it out, I couldn't hear music until I hit the headset and had the voice dialer come up but then when I tried to get the music to stick, it went away with the dialer. I'm using some cheapy Moto headset but it worked with WM. Hopefully someone will come up with an app because I don't think it's a headset issue but an Android issue.

I've tried out TopVoiceControl as a replacement for the stock 2.2 VC. It does give verification, and you give voice commands to go to next or previous match. However, it has some issues with the audio feedback on my headset (Plantronics 855 stereo), and it clips much of the name sometimes. It does have a few other features that stock is lacking, but the voice rec is no more accurate. Give it a shot if you want verification.
