Root Root/Rom suggestions?

Hey guys! I'm getting tired of waiting for the OTA froyo update when I can just root and use a leaked version. I was wondering what my best bet would be. I figure I will root with the unrevoked method since it seems straight forward. What should I use for changing roms, though? Clockworkmod looked good because the paid version allowed for updating to newer roms right off app without having to look for them... but from what I understand Titanium is the only way to transfer over your existing apps/contacts/etc to a new rom. I'm not too keen on having to reinstall ALL my apps and data... what does everyone here suggest?

Clockwork + ROM Manager + Titanium (Donate edition!)

Clockwork is a no brainer. ROM Manager free will be adequate for many ROMS, if you follow CM6 (Cyanogen) closely then paid is a huge advantage. Also, the paid version is a donation to the hard working folks that make all this possible. IMO, Titanium donate edition is a practical must. If you use the free edition, you'll have to back up every single app manually. With donate edition, it's a single click.

So I can use Clockwork in addition to Titanium? Sorry, I'm a noob to this. I though I could only use one app to flash between roms.

I guess what I'm asking is, can I use rom manager to update to the clockwork mod, and use titanium to back up my apps at the same time?

Titanium is used to backup apps/data on a chosen schedule and also to restore items after you flash a new ROM. Once up and running, you navigate to the market and re-install Titanium. Once re-installed, it references the license (to purchased version) on your SD card since it remains unaffected by the flash. It then knows you are a paid user and allows full access to Titanium paid features which includes a single click restore of all apps/data/etc. You can customize the restore to include what you want by filtering the restorable items.

It is independent of the OS. It's a custom recovery tool that was made for particular phones of various models. We're talking about the inner workings of the phone. Froyo or any other ROM is like the skin on the outside and it can be changed via Clockworkmod.

Ah, okay. I wanted to use the latest froyo with HTC Sense that was released - signed_080110_225622.zip - is there any reason I wouldn't want to use this rom?

please, please, please excuse my ignorance, but if i root and install a new rom(whether its the leaked froyo build or any custom builds), i can restore ALL my settings and apps(basically everything that i have customized since i got the phone), i can restore them all from a backup that I've taken with Titanium Backup?

planning to follow the guide here(from jonamerica):

Can some one please confirm all the things that would have to be reconfigured in manually.

I'm thinking maybe I'm stating what I want to do wrong.

Here's what I'd like to do. I'd like to update to the FroYo with HTC Sense update that's out and available. I don't want anything custom, I just want the regular old UI that comes stock on the DINC, only I want froyo.

Also I would like to be able to install some root only applications. Particularly the wifi tether.

What is my best bet for updating to froyo and having root without using any type of custom mod?

The problem is that not all apps/settings always play well when switching ROMs especially when you're talking about a leap from 2.1 to 2.2. I restored apps only (not settings & data) when I went to the first Froyo leak and I don't have ANY problems that some others have experienced.

Restoring all apps + data works well on ROMs based off the same OS in my experience. YMMV. You can definitely get your apps back although another caveat here...if the app hasn't been updated for Froyo and that's the route you intend to go, what once worked on 2.1 may not work on 2.2. Just a head's up.

There is no option like that other than stay unrooted and wait for the official release and installing OTA in which case you'll almost certainly not be able to root again unless the devs find another way in.

I'm rooted with the plan that once the official 2.2 is released, the devs will pick it apart and make it root safe to load. Then I have root and 2.2 like you wanted. But it won't happen instantly and that seems to bother a lot of people.

You'll need to upgrade the radio also for most every Froyo leak ROM out there in order to have the camera and camcorder working. Just an FYI.

I'll just root for now so I can enjoy wifi tether and whatnot now. I'll wait for a rom of the official OTA froyo and then swap over to that.

That should be a little easier and supposedly it won't be too much longer. I plan to restore back to stock when the OTA's start rolling out for DINC then re-root after. Mostly because the leak had some instabilities and I loaded the fixes which basically worked but when the full version comes out I will prefer to just have that and a simple root. Might be interested in some of the custom roms later but for now just messing around.
