How much RAM do you have free?

Hey dudes

So, I just got myself the Desire, and I'm trying to establish how my phone's doing, in terms of RAM, compared to the rest of you.

At the moment, I've got 134MB of RAM, but it can go as low as 40MB. Despite me not being able to actually feel that, it bugs me that it's so low

So what are you guys getting?

On first boot, I have 226MB free and running 11 processes. Killing those that aren't needed, I have 267MB and 3 processes.

As the day goes on I see my free memory drop gradually until even with killing processes I still have no more than 110MB. Something is causing a memory leak and instead of living for a week installing apps one at a time, I've just resigned myself to rebooting every morning and afternoon.

Awesome. What processes are safe to kill? I've basically narrowed it down to a few that I'm unsure of:

com.htc.android.htcime - i assume this one is the IME Keyboard, which I don't use, so i can kill this, right?

com.google.android.partnersetup
com.htc.socialnetwork.facebook - is this needed for facebook notifications?
com.htc.opensense.pluginmanager
com.htc.wdm
com.svox.pico
com.google.android.providers.gmail
com.android.providers.downloads
com.htc.htcMessageUploader
com.google.android.apps.uploader
com.htc.dcs.service.stock
com.htc.launcher

Any idea about those?

I don't know about those. I use "Advanced Task Manager" and on the Apps list I have excluded Astrid (To-Do manager), K-9 Mail, MMS/Messenger, Ebuddy and Twidroid as I know I want these all running for notifications. Then I hit the "End All" button (or use the widget) and find that Android starts things it needs to as and when.

The Android OS is very adept at managing memory. You don't need so much unused memory.
When the OS needs some memory it will free some up. Check out this article Android Developers Blog: Multitasking the Android Way

I've read so many views on whether a task killer is needed and how Android OS is supposed to handle backgrouns apps and memory, but in my experience the phone slows down and legs laggy when I start seeing available memory under 40MB or so. Haven't found any problems with using Task Manager the way I do.

Running services on my Desire is saying "avail 117 mb"

50mb or so when not using app killer.
170mb when using app killer.

I ignore apps like fm radio, facebook, peep, people, calendar, settings, stock, maps, mail, friendstream, footprints, etc because if I kill them they will launch after 5 seconds. I wish I could root my phone to get rid of them.

Settings ----> Applications ----> Running Services; & it'll be down the bottom on the left (assuming I'm looking at the right thing ).
