Root I wouldnt go back to stock for Froyo

That goes without saying but it appears that it flashes the bootloader so I would hold off on doing it if you like root. It could mean that we cant flash sbfs anymore, it could mean that we get a locked down bootloader and it could mean nothing

I am getting this from looking in the file and could be completely wrong though.


EDIT The bootloader was updated but sbf flashes still work

Thanks. Think I'm just going to stick with root anyways. Besides, if there are features that the official release has that our rooted froyo roms don't have, i'm sure they will be incorporated into the new roms.

I have no intention of giving up root, but I would love to know when a vanilla Droid Froyo rom that retains root is available to try out.

I imagine something like that shouldn't be too far off?

I am on the fence about rooting. the "official" 2.2 found today on this site (or soon to come OTA for us all) has not yet been confirmed if it locks down the bootloader so no future rooting. if it does, I do not do the official 2.2 and instead I will take the time/effort to root and get a 2.2 ROM. If it does not lockdown the bootloader I will go for it and root at another time when I have the time and effort and bandwidth to take it on.

so, the answer is of great interest to me.

I am less convinced that this update effects the bootloader but based on this tweet by birdman it appears that the method of rooting the droidx that has prompted new one click root methods is gone

if I follow, it seems more likely from that tweet that it does mess with the bootloader. Both DroidX and the Droid 1 get the same 2.2, no? If so, if they bricked the bootloader for the DroidX how would it not be so for the Droid 1? Unless the DroidX came with the bootloader locked down already?

I would go ahead and root now. Once you do, you will wish you hadn't waited so long. My situation is that my Droid in no way is what it used to be: a SLOW, stuttery, extremely FRUSTRATING and almost USELESS piece of hardware to me. I loved the potential I saw, but HATED the daily experience of it.

Then came root and Pete's Bugless Beast on 2.1. I'm telling you, rooting changed my Droid and changed my life. It REVOLUTIONIZED my life. There is NOTHING to be gained from the 2.2 OTA that won't find it's way into all these ROMs once our developers snag the update. Pete, Chevy, Koush, JRummy and others will give us all that - and more.

As a Droid owner, you owe it to yourself to root now - since you are interested. It's the most important thing you could do with your Droid - and SHOULD do - NOW.

The 2.2 that the DX gets is actually going to be much different than the 2.2 that the D1 gets. The DX has MotoBlur and the D1 is stock android. The DX has little affect on the D1 bootloader

I hear you loud and clear.. the issue is, IF I root, I know I will lock myself down into messing with that phone - basebands, new root only apps, ROMs, CPU speed options, etc.. not to mentoin the new 2.2 to mess with as well - and man, I just do not have the hours to dedicate to it at this moment unless forced to do so.

as well, I have my Droid so tricked out in terms of settings and apps and configured just as I want it. I fear losing that and having to redo it all and/or loose data. Why? (1) no idea how root will mess with my existing aps and setup and (2) all I read say every time you try a ROM you should wipe your data! Wipe your data??? I know that Titanium backup app exists, but I can't get an answer as to why a wipe is so suggested and whether it actually backs up EVERYTHING - apps, app data, phone settings, calendar, sms, blah blah - and then puts it ALL back EXACTLY as I had it. That might ease my angst a bit to pulling the trigger tonight.

I wouldnt say that. Its a rom he created from the update. Although I think you are right that it is still rootable. I am actually going to give it a shot in a little while here. If it works I will write a guide to rooting 2.2

So, if I do go ahead and root tonight, does something like this show up in that ROM Manager or do you just download the link from his site to your SD card? I have been reading up on ROM Manager and see that helps aid in installing, finding ROMS.. but something like this that is just done, how is that installed onto the phone when it is a stand alone link like this?

AND, I assume to be smart, the very next move after root, BEFORE doing a ROM, is something like Titanium backup to backup all of your data, yes?

Hard to explain but its a rom to flash. All the things like the stock recovery and bootloader changes get taken out when roms like this are created for rooted users.

If you root from 2.1 follow the guide in the guide to all things root related sticky. It walks through using titanium backup along the way to rooting. I will do the same with the 2.2 guide

The bootloader was changed but you can still flash sbf files with rsd lite. I got root back just had to flash a kernel after flashing SPRecovery

hmm.. guess I didnt put that together with meaning it could not use easy root app. I figured if it could "root" it could be done the long hand way or the short hand way with that new root app. it would seem root is root no matter what path you use to get there?

Root is root no matter how you get there but if Birdman seems to think that 2.2 closes the exploit that is used by the Easy Root app to gain root.
