Already Rooted?

ive been holding off rooting So this is the time? I'm still on 2.1

I am in same boat...

I think the biggest key here is that it shows 2.2 is still rootable and the bootloader is not locked down like some feared it maybe would be. thus, if you don't want to root right now, you could still get the OTA 2.2 (when it comes to you) or the not rooted 2.2 posted here and still root later and load the 2.2 ROM.

agreed?

Lol it is simple for me. I am rooted, running BB, an am sticking with BB for now - I have too many customizations built into BB, plus too many apps on the SDCard, and so many other things I have done that I simply cannot afford to start from scratch ... again.

if you are not rooted, I Highly recommend the 2.2 update.

If you are rooted, but don't really use it, go for it.

If you're dependent upon root, like I am, then hold off.

Of course, since Pete has the official 2.2 rooted now, the argument is rather moot....

while official 2.2 probably doesn't lock your boot loader it is still possible. this release from pete is basically a rom. meaning that you have to already be rooted to install it.

so this will not give me root? if i flash it?

In order to flash it, you need to have a recovery that you can manually load and flash it with. To get that recovery on your phone....

you need root.

So, in effect, if you are able to flash it, you already *have* root, and thus will be able to keep root after flashing it.

But, no, it will not give you root - again, b/c you already have to have root before you can flash it.

The one from Pete is a 'modified for root access' only Official 2. FroYo that he downloaded directly from Google's servers.

The OTA that you download is also a ROM, using the same definition.

doesn't that fact he was able to take the "official" 2.2 release and make his version of 2.2 rootable, as he says "the official Froyo OTA update rooted and ready to go:" imply that it is confirmed that it is rootable?

I understand that to use his version, you would already need to be rooted to load his ROM. But doesn't this imply that, since he was able to tweak the 2.2 release, you could technically load the "official" 2.2 - and not be rooted - and then decide later to root 2.2 and load this rooted 2.2 up then (or any 2.2 for that matter)?

I guess it just seemed clear to me that his ability to do this confirmed 2.2 would still be rootable going forward if you didn't root while in 2.1 and just waited until some point after you had the official 2.2 release (OTA or downloaded here from earlier today), we would still be able to then as they did not lock down the bootloader?

does this logic make sense?

In order to flash a recovery, don't you need root?

yes.. agreed

but I guess I am not making myself clear. to use his ROM, you must be rooted. but his ability to tweak that official release and even make his ROM I thought also clearly implied that the ability to root is still possible in 2.2 and they did not lock the bootloader, because if they had, he would not have been able to tweak it.

but by your question, I guess that assumption was wrong on my end :) and that the only thing it means is that you have to be rooted in 2.1 to load his 2.2 that is based on the "official" release and there is no implication the bootloader was locked down or not just yet.
