Best SMS messaging app?

I have used handcent sms (two different times actually) and both times ended up uninstalling it. There are many features I really like but it definitly seemed to make things a little slow and I really didn't like the bubble chat idea (I was constantly having to scscroll up and down to read long messages).

But my MAIN problem is that when I get a notification up in the notification bar (which I supposedly disabled) the only way to make it go away is to hit clear. I know that sounds petty but that was my main complaint.

Other than handcent and that chomp program what are some good SMS programs?

You can change Handcent to not be bubble styled chat. I use handcent and the chat is regular chat, no bubbles.

Under conversation style put it on Android and that should get you regular chat lines and get rid of the bubble chat.

The three programs i use to handle my calls, texts, mms are

Handcent, Missed Reminder, and EAR (sound profile application like on blackberrys)

Hi,

I read this thread and I saw 2 problems.

1. Slowing down + hangups. For me this is the +1 concern and thinking about taking Handcent SMS off my Motorola Droid. I get messages like "Application Handcent Sms (in process.com.handcent.nextsms) is not responding" ALL THE TIME. I hit "wait" but then it comes back again and again. Sometimes I have to do it 3-5 times before I get to go to the chat. I see that some people don't have this at all, while others do, and some of you thought it was a conflict with another app, but I don't have any idea how to figure out which one (and how to resolve it other than removing one or the other).

2. Somebody noted that the message counter gets screwed up from time to time and shows a smaller number of message limit than the 160 default. This is a known bug and you can see threads on the Handcent page on it. Basically special accented characters are not handled by the counter and Handcent is said to be working on this (I emailed them they never replied so I assume this is on the backburner as not too any people in the US uses accented characters, they say).

I don't mind the preinstalled messaging system, but I wanted pop ups and the ability to quick reply. I like SMS Pop Up, but I'm having issues witht he quick reply, which is what I realy wanted out of it.

I installed handcent earlier, and liked it, but hated the fact that it had it's own icon and didn't say "messages" like the system based one has. I didn't know there was a way to change it. Maybe I'll give it another go.

Although many of the different pop-up apps have a delete button, none of them actually delete the message. I get a lot of messages that are just alarms and I don't need to actually read them, or I get enough of the message in the popup, so I just want to delete them. I press the delete button, but they don't delete in the messaging app. I've tried with the default, handcent, and chomp. :(

I can confirm that the handcent popup DOES delete the sms for me.

Wow, so I'm happy to report that after using only handcent, my battery life is staying steady for a bit (even while running pandora).

I was kind of worried the past few days, the battery life on this phone seemed to drain within a few hours. Wonder if it was the preloaded messaging system (or me looking up apps like crazy? lol).

I wonder why mine doesn't work. I prefer sms popup because I want my important alarm texts to wake me when I'm asleep, but the rest to have a different notification so that they don't wake me.

So far, handcent and chomp don't do this (although they say they do.)

You mean set notification preferences by contact? It definitely does work on Handcent...unfortunately they made it kind of a pain to access config settings on a per contact aspect.

^ Sweet! Downloading Any Cut now! I've been looking for something exactly for that purpose! :D

Ok, Any Cut didn't work on my phone, it got stuck in loading mode, but upon my search I saw something called Quick Cut, that did work. Yay! I'm psyched, I love Handcent, but I hated that it didn't say messages on the screen.

Does Chomp allow MMS, I read somewhere that it doesn't support them.

Ugh, I HATED the UI of Handcent at first, but I customized it all, now I love it. I switched from the awful (IMO) bubbles to the android style conversations, and then re-did the colors because that aqua just wasn't cutting it. I made all the text black.

I like SMS Pop Up, but hated that it didn't clear the # on the messages icon if you replied via quick reply.

i use hancent and love it.. by the way how can i get rid of the annoying clicking sound when i text.. grrr i hate it, i would like it silent or at least change it

If you are using the stock virtual keyboard:

-Go to 'Settings'
-Go to 'Locale & text'
-Under the section 'Text settings' select 'Android keyboard' (not the one with the check box, but the one right below that)
-You'll then see a setting that says 'Sound on keypress.' Just unmark the check box, and you should be set.

If you are using another virtual keyboard app, then just do pretty much the same thing as above.
