Wireless tethering works pretty good...

1. if it's for rooted devices, this thread should be in the root forum
2. I'm of the opinion that wireless tethering's a gimmick b/c of the associated battery drain (like I said, imo).

I haven't tethered my Captivate yet, but I did have the my 3gs tethered (w/jailbreak). The best 'success' story I had while using it was when the family was on vacation. I would plug the phone in the wall. We had 5 items (laptops & ipod) using it at one time.

Sorry about that, I didnt even know about that other forum. Good stuff in there and there already is a wireless tethering thread in there. I'll be hanging out in there more often. :D

Even with the increased battery consumption, I'd don't think I'd call it a gimmick. It's a *great* way to access the 3G network from other devices and has some nice additional perks over USB (or BT):

- Not limited to specific devices, anything WiFi can use it
- Allows MULTIPLE devices to access concurrently
- Phone can be strategically placed to optimize cell signal

Plus you could always have it connected to power like we did in our car on a recent road trip and like we did at the IL's house a couple of weeks ago.

I agree that sometimes a USB connection might be preferable (in single user, PC only, power conserving mode), but it's nice having the "Hot Spot" option. :)

My phone is rooted, but its not able to install cause its not from the market, do i have to enable sideloading? thanks

Yes. Either root for a direct install or there's an app for sideloading that runs from your PeeCee.
