tethering via PDANet on my laptop.. speeds seems kinda slow

wife has iPhone and i use PDANet on there, wirelessly, and the speeds seem much faster.. wondering if the sprint 3G speeds are just slower than the AT&T 3G speeds...

could someone fill me in on why this seems to be true for me? i am getting a work laptop with a built in AT&T broadband card and will tell them to activate it if the speeds are significantly faster than it would be if i tethered my evo or wirelessly tethered the iPhone...

I find that hard to believe...many tests have been done and evo blows sprint out of the water on 3g. My relative has an iphone and I did tests on wifi and 3g and the evo loaded much faster. On 3g my evo was completely done loading and the iphone was about halfway (even though the screen seemed to be up the load bar was still half). I could navigate to another page by the time it was showing it was done

What speeds are you getting on the evo when tethering...maybe a bad connection?

i havent tested the speeds.. maybe i will. but i was trying to download the 2.2 update a few days ago and was tethered to my evo and the download was taking forever.. i then disconnected the evo, turned on wireless tether on the iPhone and the download seemed to more than triple.

this is not a good test to prove speeds. i need to go to a speedtest site for this. but for this one instance, i noticed it was pretty significant and AT&T seemed to win

you might have a bad EVO network radio or issues with the radio. Maybe a PRL update or Radio update might help u.

2...
well.. service is different for any service provider.. depending on location. location location location

you might be in an area that does not have good service for sprint but good for AT&T.

my opinion:
AT&T is not as good as Sprint in most cases..
you might be in the few areas that AT&T has the better connection!

3...
can you get 4G in your area?

4...
have u gotten the 2.2 update? it might help correct your network radio performance.

i havent tested it after i installed 2.2... things might have changed.. as for the load speeds on the iPhone and Evo in comparrison.. the tests were done on the phones.. not tethered.. and i have no 4G avaliable yet in my area... sucks.

i will try and do a test soon and report back with details..

3G on my EVO is faster then the 3G on my old iPhone 3Gs.

However.......tethering speeds.......tethering using MyWi on iPhone 3Gs blows the socks of tethering using (either USB or Wifi) with my Evo.

It was so bad I had to get a Verizon DSL account again.

thanks for posting this.. i just remembered that i am using MyWi on the iPhone and just a tethered usb on evo ...

so your saying the MyWi is fast on the iPhone huh? vs tethered on Evo.. why is this? is there any way or another app that i can use for the Evo to get faster speeds?

Yes it was a lot faster. I used my iPhone as a modem for 9 months without any home internet service.

I tried tethering with PDAnet on my Evo, and the Wireless tether app....both are slow. Really sucks because I have to shell out money for Verizon DSL now.

Even with that being said I still love my Evo 100 times more then the iPhone.

I've been doing numerous speed tests to try to get a better idea of my usual 3G speed. I used my girlfriend's iphone in austin the other day and tested her 3G speed, her iphone registered a 3.7mbps on 3G!! I was shocked, although I doubt that was a normal test. Even though my EVO speed tests may seem a little low, it always seems to preform very good when using the browser.

i wonder if there is a Faster app that we can use or something. i am new to Android so i have no idea.. only following the forums trying to learn as i go. previous to the Evo i was with an iPhone for 4 years..

i really need to figure this out..

is there something online that says AT&T and Spring 3G speeds?

I compared my Evo at speedtest.net with my co-workers iPhone4 on speedtest.net. Same server, and his was avging 3-4MB download and 1-2MB upload consistently. Best i've ever gotten on my Evo was 1MB d/u. AT&T's network is indeed faster i believe (and from what i've read online as well), but they're network coverage is so poor it balances out just fine.
