I had to return my Droid yesterday and when I asked the tech about apps, he told me to log into the market and sync my new phone over the PC.
WHAT??????

Sounds like he was giving me a line of BS.

Does anyone know how to recover apps, when switching phones? (other than just trying to remember what they were, and track them down)

I don't think the market is synced with your google account. I think it's synced with the device. I've formatted my G1 and gotten my apps back from the downloads section of the market before but when I actually replaced the handset (clumsy kept dropping it) there was nothing in the downloads section of the market.

App Manager is great for backing up your apps onto the SD Card. You can unistall, backup, and restore them, even save several versions of the app, all for free.

the market is linked to your google account...but it only saves your paid apps in the downloads section when going to a different device.

Well, this may be too late for you now, but I just replaced my phone yesterday and I asked the tech to switch the SD cards because I had some photos and videos I wanted. When the device was turned on, all my apps were there. I had to re-login and accept all user agreements again, but I didn't have to re-download them.

Yeah, I haven't actually tried it so I can't say for sure. But in theory if you replace your DROID, you will need to re-download your applications. But any that you purchased you will be able to download without purchasing again.

The free ASTRO File Manager has the ability to backup your applications to an SD card. But if I ever have to replace my phone, then it wouldn't bother me to just download the applications again. I'll remember the ones I need. And if I can't remember them, I must not need them. :)

Were these pay apps or free? I swapped my Droid once and kept my original SD card but my apps did not reappear on my new device, I had to re-download them.
