Welcome to the forum.
This method has been tried with all sorts of combinations & has worked each time.

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-desire/124085-rooting-tool-one-click-program.html

One person i know of has tried it with his & i think his was the 0.83 bootloader too, but he hasn't had any success.
For some reason the clockwork recovery screen stays black.
Don't get impatient & upgrade to froyo if it comes along as there is no way to root from the OTA.

I'm on 0.83 (I made a big mistake) but you can root your phone using the method anoniemouse states and you can gold card. I'm trying to downgrade my HBoot to 0.75 so I can get back on track I have a modified ROM (PAYS) but my phone needs a sim unlock and no web site can unlock it don't want to go back to my provider. Just be careful when modifying your phone a really read into all scenarios that could happen this is the bitter voice of exeriance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just took a quick look at this some one has replied that it does not work for 0.83 but it's worth giving it a go when I get home tonight, fingers crossed will let you know if it works

Got to be worth a try as some people as you probably know get confused with instructions & fail, where as some one else will succeed.
Good luck m8 hope it works, otherwise it will be a matter of holding fire till 0.83 gets cracked

I'm in the same boat. Desire arrived from O2 this week, with hboot 0.83

I've managed to root it with unrevoked, but I can't boot into recovery to flash a new ROM.

I'll be trying this [HOW-TO] downgrade HBOOT 0.92 to 0.80 again once I get home (need my Goldcard)

I've got the same issue as you Jack. Can root with UnrEVOked 3.1, but can't boot into recovery and flash custom roms, or unbrand with 1.21 RUU (even with a goldcard).

My phone's on Vodafone which I bought on tuesday, but it came with the 1.24.161 update which is getting everyone up in arms. It also has the 0.83 HBOOT, but I haven't tried downgrading it yet (that's a job for this evening!). Really want proper unbranded 2.2!

Has anyone got any cheeky tactics for dealing with HBOOT 0.83?

Any help is much appreciated.

Only the downgrading method that is being posted, i am afraid if that don't work you are all stuck waiting for something else to come up.

well I got to 0.83 boot loader by installing an arabic version of android by mistake (BIG MISTAKE!!!) but as stated you can still root. I would suggest if you want to have Android 2.2 use this rom after you have rooted, Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM

hey, it seems. i crashed my desire...

my desire have already hboot 0.83 and i think, your arabic fw can help me...

could you please send me a link of this firmware?
ruu would be the best...

ok, DO NOT do this.

Seems to have totally bricked my phone  It still turns on, vibrates, but nothing else - totally blank screen. Can't boot into bootloader or anything. Luckily I've only just bought the phone, and my network are going to replace it.

as i already wrote, i've got the same problem.

so, i think, the simpliest way of rescue, is to update the hboot to 0.92 (for example with a froyo RUU, but there is no RUU for the moment or with the arabic fw as bombdrop posted).

are you sure that you haven't followed any of the steps wrong?
not afaik. all looked right; got to step 4, pressed vol up, the screen went blank and then did nothing for ages. eventually decided nothing was going to happen, pulled the battery and ended up as it is now.

power on with vol down does nothing. cannot connect with adb. RUU flashers cannot detect a phone.

It seems as if only one person has had success in downgrading their hboot version, so a BIG WARNING TO ANYONE TRYING TO DOWNGRADE HBOOT TAKE EXTREME CARE.
