Root 3G mobile hotspot

alright i know i got this somewhere on another forum and found it to be a great way to wifi tether out of the box with out root
on the phone do ##778 goto edit mode enter 000000 then into the security settings change the S.IP DUN User name to yourvzwnumber@vzw3g.com and back out of there to the M.IP Default Profile and change your DUN NAI to yourvzwnumber@vwz3g.com hit menu and hit Commit Modifications.
I have tested and verified this works 100% with no problems.

Granted to have the 3g mobile hot spot option you need to have loaded the leaked OTA but i see this would also work when 2.2 is released!

Have you used it long enough to know if VZW knows you are using it and decide to charge you for it? I am guessing that those settings are the ones their pay for tethering service use.

No i have just started using this on monday and im not sure if they will start to pay or not. I do know that before i changed this and i had the 3g hotspot on and tried to surf the internet on my connected laptop i would be directed to my acct to add the service, so for now it is a handy work around to get internet with no root when you have the leaked OTA.

The only way verizon knows is because of those settings. If you change them it just pulls data through the same channel as using the phone directly. I tether like this (but with a usb cable) and they can't tell the difference.

There is a fix for the wpa2 but wpa works great for me...

nope not yet but it can be slow to connect a lil but other than that works great

Yeah it works great. I did something similar to this on my LG Dare and only used it a few times but never got any crazy charges. You should be fine as long as you stay away from the torrent sites, etc.

Just want to be clear. If this works once the official OTA is out, I might unroot and just go with that after all.

ED: I might as well say that I have peer-to-peer wifi working on my rooted phone already, so the setting might have been changed unbeknownst to me during the process.

Well, I'm just posting in this thread to say that I intend to make myself a guinea pig once the official OTA is released.

I have reverted back to stock and unrooted. Hopefully this will work with the final release due out on August 18, and that this will be useful information for anyone else who would only root for the Wifi.

This is not working for me. It's hanging at "Please wait while commiting change" and then gives me an error about radio being unresponsive.

Any suggestions?

this works great with my unrooted incredible too. I just downloaded the 2.05 radio update and the 3g hotspot is included in that update. Thanks so much for this tip!

This may be old news, but I'm just posting to confirm that I DO NOT have root, I have the official 2.2 update, and I'm browsing the web using my phone as a 3G hotspot without paying Verizon's exorbitant fees!

For anyone who would have only rooted for the router functionality, you can do it 100% fine and free without it.
