Root Absolute NOOB...

I'll get straight to the point.

I want to root my evo running 2.2

I have searched (here and google) for a guide to do so, but it's like information overload. I feel like I'm in one of those damn bing commercials. Everyone and their mother has a guide to root the evo. I have noe idea which one is good or which one is bad.

I've read about all of these roms and flashing them or not flashing them. Again, more information overloaded.

I mainly want my evo rooted for either USB or WiFi tether, which ever is possible with whatever rom I pick. If that makes any sense...

Anyone care to school me?

You're absolutely right. Researching how to root is not easy. There are tons of guides for noobs but they are not easy to find, especially when you don't know where to look. My only advice is to take it slow, read anything that seems relevant. Get familiar with the key terms and what they mean: ROM, kernel, recovery image, bootloader, unlocking NAND, etc.

As for wanting to root your 2.2 phone, you will have to wait. There's currently no way to root a 2.2 phone. So take the time to keep reading. It does start to make sense eventually. And when you are ready to root, you will have a much easier time doing what you want to do, because you understand WHY you are doing it. Blindly following procedures is a recipe for disaster.

I'll also say this:

Rooting your phone is much like swapping out your automatic transmission car for a stick shift. And just because you have more control of the car doesn't mean it will drive itself.

A lot of people root their phone thinking that all this hidden functionality will automatically be there. While some things are instantly available (like uncapping FPS), other things, like wifi tether, require some configuration. You'll also have to maintain your own system since you'll no longer automatically get OTA updates. Not trying to discourage you. I love the control I have over the phone and would never consider giving it up. Just wanted to set the proper expectation.

I was kind of thinking there wasn't a root yet available for 2.2 since all of the guides I found were pre 2.2

When you say "I'll have to maintain my system" what exactly are you taking about? The only OTA update I would have to worry about is when 3.0 comes out correct?

If you want to USB tether you can use easytether or pdanet. They don't require root.

I really don't know if there will be any more 2.x point releases, or if the next one is 3.0. Whatever the case, you'll be manually flashing a rooted version of it. If you end up using a non-stock rom, you'll have to keep track of any progress by that development team and get an update when you want/need it. Basically, nothing will be spoon-fed to you. The vast majority of people with unrooted phones will just get an OTA announcement, and they're upgraded. You'll get to pick and choose, and update at your own pace. If none of this sounds like a disadvantage, then you're a good candidate for having a rooted phone
