2.1: Loss of 3G after "factory wipe"

As stated in the sticky above, 2.1 users are unable to factory wipe. I'd like to discuss options such as using SPrecovery to roll back to original stock settings and then "wiping"; obviously the risk of losing 3G is a primary concern of mine as due to unfortunate circumstances, I have no insurance and doubt my warranty is still active, I got the phone back in April.

Anyone know anything about the specifics of this problem?
