although you'll probably hear differently from a bunch of other die hard hero and fresh fans...my experience with fresh 2.1.2 and 2.3 has been......
MASSIVE GMAIL SYNCH ISSUES

i've had problems that you've had and even more common, deleting from hero doesn't delete from gmail. now i've managed to work around that by clearing data in both gmail apps. try that and you'll probably get it running again.

again...some users on here will probably disagree...but

i have flashed back to fresh 2.1 as it is WAYYYYYY faster/smoother and responsive. and everything works. you don't get the customization of the deodexed ROM but at least i don't have to jimmy my phone to get it to work. i changed my number on fresh 2.3 and had to flash to my RUU in order to get the profile to update. at the time i didn't have a nandroid of fresh 2.1...so i can't speak for it working in that regard. and YES...i updated Flipz patches. hope this helps.

i think it has something to do with nandroid restore. i restored a nandroid because i was trying out some lockscreens and after i restored the nandroid is when it started happening? im not sure tho but that is why i prefer to wipe and download everything again instead of restoring a nandroid. ive just wiped and reflashed fresh 2.3.3 so hope it will start working again. thanks for your reply

FWIW, THIS THREAD solved my issue with this problem :)

yo...check it out...i already said this in my post above?

and this doesn't fix it permanently.

yo... check it out... that's awesome!?

I was just sharing that it worked for me when I experienced this issue today when restoring a nandroid.

The thread I listed was MUCH easier to read and helped me more than this thread (hence why I shared it). The important this, is that it is fixed (even if temporary). :)

well yes...i suppose you're right. a fix is a fix...but people should know it doesn't fix the inherit problem with the ROM. i will add - i would hope that an Android/Hero user who's flashing ROMs would know what 'clear data' means.

Very true :)

I was at work when I did my nandroid restore and was searching for solutions to the problem from my phone FWIW. Reading threads from the phone, you sometimes miss things.

Oh well. Hopefully it's a bug that get's fixed. If not (and if it happens again) back to zen I go.

since we're on the topic...and to get away from the sarcasm. :)

here's what i've found:

Fresh 2.1.1 has NO Gmail sync issues...no matter how long you run it.
Fresh 2.1.2 DOES HAVE the Gmail sync issues listed above
Fresh 2.3.3 DOES HAVE the Gmail sync issues listed above
DC has NO Gmail sync issues that i have experienced thus far...

your results may vary, but this is what has happened for me on the popular ROMs people use.
