Root So complicated, brain is mush

Oh dear god, why is rooting Android so insanely complicated? I feel I have had my brain whisked trying to read the guides. They have made made me more confused than ever!

Does there exist a guide that tells you everything and assumes nothing?

I have an HTC Desire on T Mobile, all I want to do is root the phone so I can get the official HTC Android 2.2 with Sense on it.

I need a guide that explains everything step-by-step and assumes nothing. I haven't seen a single guide that fits the bill yet. They all say things like "Nandroid backup!"... huh? Or "copy ROM.zip and Radio.zip".. eh? Where do I get those, what are they?

Then there's all the stuff about Goldcards... some guides tell you to make them, others never mention them. What is it? Do I need one... I don't know!

I honestly thought Android was about freedom, but I feel a lot more constrained and shackled than I ever did with my Jailbroken iPhone which was a painless and simple process!

Can someone please come to my rescue with a guide I can actually understand?

Goldcard>only if you're branded.

T Mobile? > Goldcard

There are stickys in this sub forum by Lekky which will suit your needs. Any one of his link will lead you to step by step guides, and refers to any files you need, and any requirements you need.

Now can I assume you can find those.....

If you are rooting you don't need a goldcard at all.

Okay, okay, I've managed to follow your guide Lekky and got up to the end of section 5 so my phone is rooted. YAY!

So, next questions, what do I do next to get the 2.2 Froyo update? Does this mean I am de-branded now? Do I need to complete step 6 for Apps2SD?

Ideally you want to pick one of your roms from here

Desire Android Development - xda-developers

& stay rooted rather than the froyo update, you can get the basic froyo rom or more customised versions.
All these roms run better than the OTA one.

OH MY GOD... That page scares the hell out of me! I don't understand any of the things on that page... :(

What do I need to download for Froyo and how do I update the ROM myself? Why are there so many... what do they all do?

Also, still not sure about the de-branding thing. For some reason my phone had a Virgin icon on the home screen, but I'm T Mobile, what's that about?

Pick your rom & a radio zip sometimes they are all in one zip file,
the following link is almost the basic froyo version.

[ROM] Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM [Market issue fixed] - xda-developers

Copy the rom & radio zips to your sd card
Turn off your phone then turn on while holding the volume down key.
select recovery & you should get your green writing on a black background.

First do a nandroid backup
Now select the wipe cache & then factory reset
Next locate install zip from sd card & then select the radio zip,
that will be some numbers like this 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20
Once that has installed do the same again but select your rom.
once that has installed select reboot
Let it do its thing, sometimes it can take a while.
Once it has fired up reboot your phone again, then you can start installing apps.

Okay, more questions :)

1) What's a radio? Seen lots of things like "Don't forget to update the Radio"... huh?

2) What's nandroid backup and how do I do that? Keep seeing people say "do a nandroid backup" but never an explanation.

You do the nandroid backup from the root menu, What it is is a copy of your phone how it is now.
If you are unlucky enough to have got a corrupt download of a rom, it allows you to go back to a previous working state.

The radio is the part that allows the phone to communicte via wifi & phone network

Which menu is the root menu? How do I get to it, is that when you hold the volume button down? When I do a Nandroid backup do I have to use a separate SD card?

Yes the hold the volume button down when turning your phone on, once the phone has turned on you then select recovery.
Now you should be in the root menu, green writing on a black background.
Nandroid backup should be done on the card you normally keep in your phone.

seriously mate its not complicated at all, why don't you just wiki "rooting" and you should learn all you need to know, how come you have rooted if you don't know much about it? you have jumped in with both feet haven't ya!! have a read up on all the terms mate, Lekky has a really helpful link in his sig "Glossary of terms" it tells you everything you need to know.

I have read a lot, but much of the time things are never properly explained. The guides Lekky has written are the best I've seen and his guide to rooting was quite easy to follow in the end.

I've managed to do a Nandroid backup now so that's good. I think that means I'm pretty safe now...

Still, the whole issue of flashing new ROMs is confusing to me, the message board at xda-developers is far more confusing especially when you see so many replies with people saying it does/doesn't work... every single ROM seems to have people reporting completely opposite experiences! How are you supposed to know which ROM to use and which Radio to use with it?

At least with the iPhone it was simple, there was one way to jailbreak, one way to unlock and a simple process to do it that was reliable.

I can't seem to find an HTC Sense Froyo 2.2 ROM that has a proven track record unless I'm missing something?

Also, when I flash a new ROM, do I lose all my apps and data each time? Not sure if this is right but it seems like you have to wipe/erase the phone before flashing. Is that so? Seems like a real PITA if it's true!

Like I say, been reading loads of threads but can't seem to find the answers. Or at least, I keep finding conflicting information.

I will try to explain things for you.

You will see different people reporting different issues with every ROM, that's not to say that you will have the same problems, you might have an issue with a ROM but i could flash that same rom and not have the issue your having...

Flashing a new rom.

Before you flash any rom, you need to do a Titanium back up (app can be d/l from market) install T/B click "problems and then click YES and download busybox, once this has done open notification bar and click on titanium back up, it will then open again at the top select middle box Backup/restore then press MENU>batch then select "back up all apps and user data" let it run, once its done you will have a file on you SD card that says Titanium back up, all your apps and user data is now in this file, i found that its a good idea to make a copy of this file to your PC for safe keeping. so now you have your T/B done you can go ahead and choose the ROM you like, im using Roufianous V6 (radio included in the ROM (sometimes the radio will have to be flashed seperatley) Transfer it to your SD card along with the radio if specifically stated in rom thread. once you have these two copied to your SD card you can turn off your phone, turn back on while holding down the VOL- (down) you will then enter recovery, select nandroid back up (let it run) once that is done select wipe/factory reset after that, install radio (choose zip from SD card) if its seperate to the rom, then follow same steps to install ROM, once finished press back and select "reboot" once your phone has rebooted (dont panic if it doesn't boot up as it normally would) go through all the steps to set up your phone (logging into google/facebook etc) once all that is done, go to the market and install Titanium back up, do all the busybox stuff again (remember to allow install apps from unknown source settings>apps) once busybox has installed select "back up/restore" again, then MENU>batch this time scroll down and you should see an option restore all apps and user data (if this says 0 then check your memory card to see if the titanium back up file is there, if not, copy the file that i advised you save to your PC over to you SD card and run titanium again, once it has finished (you may have to install apps maually, just select install when its done, dont select open, select DONE, and titanium will move on to the next app) you need to reboot your phone and when it restarts it will be just how you left it after the titanium back up.....

PHEWWWW!!!!! sorry for the long winded post, and i hope this helps you out

edit: keep an eye on the Nandroid back ups file on your SD card as each back up is like 3-400MB so it wont be long until its eating away at your memory card free space, i had like 6 on mine one day!! just keep the back up that you are happy with, and then delete the rest.

That was weird, I just get Rom Manager to download the "Pinky Desire 0.6" ROM and then told it to install. But it rebooted my phone into menu and nothing happened, anyway, selected the option to reboot and it came back as it was before. But the update didn't install.

Maybe I'll try your method.

did you download the radio too? flash that first then the ROM

Just reporting back to say it seems like everything worked... well the HTC weather won't seem to find my location, don't know why. But other than that it is all good so far.

Been reading this topic since before i became a member so glad to see you finally made it.:)
I`ve had problems with HTC weather on Android 2.1 so i don`t think it`s a specific 2.2 problem.
