I have read a lot, but much of the time things are never properly explained. The guides Lekky has written are the best I've seen and his guide to rooting was quite easy to follow in the end.
I've managed to do a Nandroid backup now so that's good. I think that means I'm pretty safe now...
Still, the whole issue of flashing new ROMs is confusing to me, the message board at xda-developers is far more confusing especially when you see so many replies with people saying it does/doesn't work... every single ROM seems to have people reporting completely opposite experiences! How are you supposed to know which ROM to use and which Radio to use with it?
At least with the iPhone it was simple, there was one way to jailbreak, one way to unlock and a simple process to do it that was reliable.
I can't seem to find an HTC Sense Froyo 2.2 ROM that has a proven track record unless I'm missing something?
Also, when I flash a new ROM, do I lose all my apps and data each time? Not sure if this is right but it seems like you have to wipe/erase the phone before flashing. Is that so? Seems like a real PITA if it's true!
Like I say, been reading loads of threads but can't seem to find the answers. Or at least, I keep finding conflicting information.
I will try to explain things for you.
You
will see different people reporting different issues with every ROM, that's not to say that
you will have the same problems, you might have an issue with a ROM but i could flash that same rom and not have the issue your having...
Flashing a new rom.
Before you flash any rom, you need to do a Titanium back up (app can be d/l from market) install T/B click "problems and then click YES and download busybox, once this has done open notification bar and click on titanium back up, it will then open again at the top select middle box Backup/restore then press MENU>batch then select "back up all apps and user data" let it run, once its done you will have a file on you SD card that says Titanium back up, all your apps and user data is now in this file, i found that its a good idea to make a copy of this file to your PC for safe keeping. so now you have your T/B done you can go ahead and choose the ROM you like, im using Roufianous V6 (radio included in the ROM (sometimes the radio will have to be flashed seperatley) Transfer it to your SD card along with the radio if specifically stated in rom thread. once you have these two copied to your SD card you can turn off your phone, turn back on while holding down the VOL- (down) you will then enter recovery, select nandroid back up (let it run) once that is done select wipe/factory reset after that, install radio (choose zip from SD card) if its seperate to the rom, then follow same steps to install ROM, once finished press back and select "reboot" once your phone has rebooted (dont panic if it doesn't boot up as it normally would) go through all the steps to set up your phone (logging into google/facebook etc) once all that is done, go to the market and install Titanium back up, do all the busybox stuff again (remember to allow install apps from unknown source settings>apps) once busybox has installed select "back up/restore" again, then MENU>batch this time scroll down and you should see an option restore all apps and user data (if this says 0 then check your memory card to see if the titanium back up file is there, if not, copy the file that i advised you save to your PC over to you SD card and run titanium again, once it has finished (you may have to install apps maually, just select install when its done, dont select open, select DONE, and titanium will move on to the next app) you need to reboot your phone and when it restarts it will be just how you left it after the titanium back up.....
PHEWWWW!!!!! sorry for the long winded post, and i hope this helps you out
edit: keep an eye on the Nandroid back ups file on your SD card as each back up is like 3-400MB so it wont be long until its eating away at your memory card free space, i had like 6 on mine one day!! just keep the back up that you are happy with, and then delete the rest.
