Root XTR vs Cyanogen/Kaos Froyo

Ok, I tried it again. I run MM, I try to apply the theme, it asks me if I want to reboot - the screen is unresponsive. It reboots shortly anyway, and the phone remains with the HTC lockscreen. I'm still trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I did go into settings of MM and set the delay to the highest, and it still doesn't change anything.

Hmm. Have you tried the method by plugging it into your computer and running that script? I actually like that method better than using MM.

Edit: Also, I think you might have to remove or rename HtcLockScreen.apk

A big thanks to everyone on this forum! I have had so much fun with root.

xtrROM 3.03 is definitely a solid ROM. I've been switching between this and Plain JaneT2 (another solid ROM). 2.1 experiences for me have been simple and enjoyable. 2.2, on the other hand, have been a little more challenging (i.e. no work email, just gmail).

I just can't run a 2.2 ROM without my work email (sad, i know).

For me, xtr is the only ROM I use any more. I've tried problably half-a-dozen others, and xtr to me seems to be the best.
I flashed 3.1 and couldn't get it to create my exchange account for work, which is a deal breaker for me. But I don't need anything more than 3.0.3 any way. It's smooth, fast, and stable (for an Eris).
On another note, my girlfriend just got the Incredible, and I'm blown away by how fast it is. Seeing what a high end device can do with the Sense stock has made me question how much longer I can tolerate the Eris. Even with OC and optimized ROM builds, my phone is about half as fast as hers.

The exchange account thing... Have you heard if and how this can be fixed? I like 3.03 too, but if I can continue to move on to something like 3.1 or whatever (for the pure fun of it), I want to be able to sign in using my exchange email. Someone please help us!!!

- Mms works fine in some Eris devices running 2.2, but posted reports show a majority with non-functionality.
I think that should read "a minority with non-functionality".
- Gallery will load and properly display its contents after a live battery pull, but then the strange, Peter Max-like thumbnails will re-appear with a simple turn of the device to landscape mode and back
This is an issue with the 3D Gallery app, not any ROM. This occurs on 2.1 as well as 2.2 ROMs, does it not ?

I don't agree with that, thus the way I stated it. ;)

I can't make it happen in 2.1 ROMs on my device, and I'd never seen such a thing until 2.2.

Let me just say that up until today I was pretty much convinced that I would be using KaosFroyo as my main OS for the foreseeable future. The bugs didn't bother me, because I knew that Kaos was working his ass off to fix them, and that one day they would be. However, today at my friends college graduation I wasn't able to take pictures as well as I would have liked. Then, in the car, the Pandora sound quality issues with Froyo started to bother me.

About an hour ago I flashed XTR 3.0.3 and even without OC it's as fast as KaosFroyo seemed to be. No bugs to speak of, and everything works. So far it seems like this may be the best ROM I've flashed, yet.

MMS works on

TazzCyanogen
CELB Froyo
KaosFroyo
Nonsensikal

I can't find anymore Froyo-based ROMs listed at XDA... Can you tell me which ROMs it doesn't work on ?

Searching this site shows reports of people having the issue as soon as the leaked 2.1 ROMs came out.

I just posted the same question at XDA, but is anybody else having an issue with Google SkyMap and XTR 3.0.3? The compass doesn't seem to be tracking my position at all - it always thinks that I am facing south.

I've never had use for SkyMap, but I went ahead and tried it early this morning and found it quite insteresting (running xtrROM 3.0.3) and with no issues.

I am not certain, but I think the compass is G-sensor dependent; you might try doing a calibration (menu > settings > sound and display > G-sensor calibration) and see if that improves the compass accuracy.

I found this in a thread at another forum:

"...the compass measures the local magnetic field, and as such might be
influenced by various electronics devices around the phone."

"For example, try using a compass application and move near/far a PC, and
you'll see the pin tilting towards it sensibly."

I noticed that when I first turn on the compass app the needle shows all over the place. To make it work right I have make some figure-8s in the vertical plane and that corrects. After that if I turn the phone horizontal the compass will show to the correct North. Till the next time I use it.

Those motions are recommended by some compass apps to "calibrate."

Yep, I ended up installing a compass app, doing the figure 8, and all is copacetic with SkyMap. Interesting that it did not work in XTR, I reflashed CELB - it worked - then reflashing XTR and it did not work again (until the figure 8).

I've been looking for xtrROM to download and cant find the link, could someone please assist??

You'll find everything that you need to know at this link here: [ROM-BETA] [7/30/2010] xtrROM3.1 [apps2sd,jit,lwp,nav,oc]-Vanilla that embraces HTC - xda-developers

noob question alert, but can other home screens run on xtrROM, say launcherpro for instance, or do I have to stick with the one that came with the rom?

absolutely. xtr comes with the android default home screen. You can load any back on. Just go to market and download launcherpro and install it, configure it, and love it.

I am with frisco in opinion. xtr is the best rom I have used. Can't wait for 3.1 to come out of beta.

I have been running (FroYo) Tazz v5 for a few days now and have liked it so far. Flashed v6 last night and saw an increase in lag on my Eris. Went through and rechecked all my settings and still have some lag. I am flashing xtr right now. Froyo was nice but didn't really have anything I absolutely needed, so I am going back to 2.1 now. I really just want a fast and stable rom. My main issue with rooting is the amount of work not getting done because I am messing with my phone!
