About EDGE 3G and Wifi

So, EDGE is slower than 3G, but can Wifi sort of fix this? Idk, I guess what I'm asking is "Is Wifi a thing that is 'like' EDGE and 3G that you can put your phone on and its speed will increase? Is this the case or is it simply EDGE or 3G? Thanks, and sorry for the confusion, lol, just wondering if putting it on Wifi will increase speed for everything.

Uhh... I'm not sure whether to call you a n00b, or actually explain the difference. Seriously, this is 2008. Seriously.

Anyone else wanna take a stab at this?

EDIT: Ok, that might have been kinda mean (albeit appropriate), so here are some Wikipedia links that you might find useful: WiFi, EDGE and 3G. I'll leave the rest up to you. (And what I mean by that is you should really read those Wikipedia articles thoroughly.)

there are people in this world who arent tech freaks

thanks for helping him....

Tyberg, wifi is not 3g or edge, like people said, wifi is a direct internet connection provided by a home/office/business connection. its faster because its the direct internet, rather then having to use 3g or edge. using 3g or edge, your still sending requests to the towers for the certain website. which takes a while. 3g just has more advanced towers so information travels much faster. speed wise its more likemore like... dial up-edge dsl- 3g cable-wifi. easier way to think of it by speed.

i'm sorry i cant help but say this...

knowing what wifi is.... isn't just for tech freaks. Maybe 6 years ago when wired LAN was the proprietary standard. But i think if I go walk around the street and ask if they know what i'm talking about if i mention wifi, they would.

and.. excuse you gogita502 for saying 3G is DSL and cable is Wifi. DSL is on par with cable, thank you very much. I bet my DSL is faster than alot of cables out there.

Now, to cap it off, if you know/have fiOS... then you are a tech freak, and in which case I would be jealous. I want to call verizon everyday until they offer me the fiOS 50mbps service in my town.

I'm a little surprised to see people preferring DSL over cable too, but I'm not going to act like I'm the cable vs dsl guru either. I've had both and have just had a much better experience on cable.

I think it just depends. Distance from provider affects DSL, how many people you're sharing with affects cable, etc etc. (and how much you want to spend for speed)

Yes?

yes. I personally live close to a switch. Heres whats available near me to prove to you that I like DSL better:

Road Runner is my cable provider. Their max speed for cable is 10mbps. Thats the most expensive one they offer.I switched to DSLextreme.com internet this year, and they offered me 15mbps. and i'm getting around 12-13mbps after running some speed tests.. which is more than cable's MAX speed. If your cable provider has higher speeds than 10.. then i want to know who provides it for you, because when i had adelphia/roadrunner, 10mbps was always the max speed.....

So in short, this is why I like DSL:

1) Faster
2) Cheaper
3) DONT HAVE TO SHARE WITH NEIGHBORHOOD
4) Just plain better

go figure.

EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Environment) is a faster version the Global System for Mobile (GSM) wireless service designed to deliver data at rates up to 384 Kbps and enable the delivery of multimedia and other broadband applications to mobile phone and computer users. The EDGE standard is built on the existing GSM standard, using the same time-division multiple access (TDMA) frame structure and existing cell arrangements. Ericsson notes that its base stations can be updated with software.

3G is the third generation of mobile phone standards and technology. 3G supersedes 2G technology and precedes 4G technology. 2.5G was a temporary bridge between 2G and 3G.

3G technologies enabled faster data-transmission speeds, greater network capacity and more advanced network services

The first pre-commercial 3G network launched in May 2001 by NTT DoCoMo in Japan. The network was branded as FOMA. Following the first pre-commercial launch, NTT DoCoMo again made history with the first commercial launch of 3G in Japan on Oct. 1, 2001.

(WIreless-FIdelity) A logo from the Wi-Fi Alliance that certifies network devices comply with the IEEE 802.11 wireless Ethernet standards. In the early 2000s, Wi-Fi/802.11 became widely used (initially 802.11b, then 802.11g), and within a short time, all laptops and other handheld devices came with Wi-Fi built in. Earlier laptops can be Wi-Fi enabled by plugging in a Wi-Fi adapter via the USB port or PC Card. For details about how Wi-Fi fits into a home or office network, see wireless LAN. For details about the transmission technology, see 802.11. See Wi-Fi Alliance, WiMAX, Wi-Fi Multimedia, Wi-Fi camera, Muni Wi-Fi, wireless mesh network, hotspot and cellular vs. Wi-Fi.

you like dsl better but in reality its worse

it may be cheaper but its slower i have optimum online(east coast) soeeds up to 15mbps down and 2mbps up

its 29.99

even with my neighborhood i DOUBT your dsl is faster.

cable is just plains better and faster.

all you proved is that its cheaper and that EVERYONE around you has cable that haults your cable speeds to less then dsl speeds.... dude get the picture, type in google dsl vs. cable see who EVERYONE picks and why. cable ALWAYS get the speed. i really dont see how one says dsl is faster then cable. thats like saying kia is faster then a bmw..... pshhh

Geeeeez, guys, what are you arguing about?

Of course Cable is better than DSL.... if you live in quiet neighborhood where not too many folks load the line with their p2p or live video downloads (remember, you share your cable with all neighbors), and their network is decent....

And undoubtfully, DSL beats cable hands down if you live right next to a switch, your copper phone lines are new (remember, some old neighbrhoods/buildings still have wiring from 1940-1950ies or older), and your phone company maintains their equipment properly.

So stop arguing - you are right (each of you).
You can't say X is better than Y. The right thing to say is X is better than Y in neighborhood Z.

LEM.
P.S. I've had dial-up (my first was 2400 baud), DSL, Cable... and now have FiOS... So I've seen them all.

no, this is fun. let me keep going. umm lets see where was i..

oh yeah, 15 is MAX speed.. i'm on the 15mbps plan with 13mbps which is awsome already. When I had cable even though it was the 10mbps but theres no way you can get 10.. DUHHHHHHH. I always got around 8-9mbps. silly rabbit.

i have enough vitality to keep going all day.. bring it on!!!!!

what do you mean its BS? go check dslextreme.com they (and alot of providers) have already rolled out their 15mbps plan. If you think i'm lying, then go visit the site and write them an email saying that they're BS. LOLROFFLES
