What happened to the dev support?

One of the reasons I bought the Captivate was because everyone was clamoring how much the developers would be on this phone like a hobo on a Hot Pocket. I went over to XDA and most of these guys are totally in up in arms about the lack of unified support for this phone, versus the great hacking going on by the Vibrant. No offense to anyone here who develops over at XDA, but it looks like amateur hour over there.

So what happened guys?

it's all the same phone isn't it? (software wise) the only difference is AT&T doesn't allow sideloads.

Seeing as how this is basically AT&T's first real android device, I'm not surprised in the low number of people working on it.

development is slow because the opensource kernels Samsung released were not the production versions found in the stock rom. when we're able to get the source for a kernel that is equivalent to the stock one, a lot more advances will be made.

Seeing as how this is basically AT&T's first real android device, I'm not surprised in the low number of people working on it.

people have also made the argument that captivate will receive more support because it has much less competition on it's carrier (and thus higher adoption rate). it's understandable that the support is delayed as much of the user base is new to android, but I do believe that given time it will be more active than the others.

Hmmm....

I am a regular on the XDA forums and I don't see anyone up in arms regarding the development of ROMs.

The source code was released maybe 10 days ago, and the drivers a week after that. There are development ROMs for the i9000 that can be installed, but they require the Captivate kernel, and they have bugs.

Also Froyo is out, and many developers are looking towards that as we are supposed to start seeing Galaxy S upgrades in September.
