It's official 2.1 is better than 2.2!

Unfortunately, 2.2 brought with it the shuddering unlock screen. It seems like every time I unlock my phone, the little bar we drag down wants so badly to just lock up and freeze. Aside from that nuisance, I think Im enjoying 2.2. I mean, yea, flash isn't the smoothest thing out there in here, but hell dude, I can now watch my love streaming sites all from my phone! That's whats up, in my book anyways.

I've noticed this too as well. Every time I go to unlock it it skips. 2.1 it was always smooth and crisp.

Google Analytics is not working well on the Android 2.2 browsers. I tried both stock and dolphin hd. When you click on the date, the drop down does not show anything!
Everything was working fine in 2.1!!!

As much as everyone doesn't seem to want to admit it, resting to factory fixes almost every issue I've seen with 2.2. That tells me that it's not the 2.2 itself which is the problem, it is either bad/misconfigured info coming over from 2.1, or rather the 2.2 UPDATE which was bad. Not the build.

Based on all the feedback I saw, I went ahead and factory reset, both before and after updating my 2.2 (just to be safe). The result.. NONE of the problems I was having with 2.1 (though they were minor lockups and a few 'odd' items like wallpaper not changing) are even there. The device runs flawlessly.

And for those wondering, I'm actually using the rooted version of the stock UI rom (have tried both the Oxed and Deoxed(ver.E) versions from xda, both ran without a hitch so far).

If you are having problems.. bite the bullet, wipe the phone to factory and start over. you'll probably not have to do it again until Gingerbread anyway

Another MAJOR vote for 2.1. My phone was basically perfect before the damn update and now I have had problems that I NEVER had before.

I would attribute that to 2.2.

Problems that have popped up:

- 1/3 of my music and all of my video files literally disappeared from my SD card. I have no idea where they went....

The WEB BROWSING on 2.2 SUCKS. But aside from that no major issues.

Not sure what you are talking about. I use Dolphin HD and it runs exactly the same on 2.2 as it did on 2.1.

2.2 turned out to be good for me...I waited until yesterday to upgrade...did a backup first.

Bone stock Evo, 4G is nice.

Could be Flash is the complaint.

Go to your browser settings and near the bottom there's a setting for plugins - change that from always to on demand. (You'll get a green play widget on your Flash vids set up that way.) Then - clear your browser cache.

See if that peps things back up. If you'd rather have Flash on all the time, maybe try setting a small cache - not sure if that will help for your case or not.

As Eric suggests, maybe try Dolphin HD and see if that's a better option for you.

The factory wipe is only part of it. It's required, but doesn't guarantee success. I found that if I restored all my apps and data, it pretty much canceled out the wipe. In another attempt, I didn't restore apps or system settings; just personal info like sms/call history, phone contacts, etc. I was finally able to get a good 2.2 build that doesn't leak battery juice.

It's just one data point (mine), but possibly worth noting in the "how to fix froyo" guide. best chance of success is to rebuild everything from scratch, and restore only what you can't possibly get back any other way (voicemail, old phone contacts, etc).

And even if a hard reset is the answer, it's a horrible one, and I would still attribute it to this particular 2.2 update. It's a migration error. We don't know what percentage of people it affects, and it may well be a small number, but the team at HTC clearly didn't account for something, and it's affecting certain 2.1 configurations, whether it be an app setting or system setting, or handling of orphaned data, etc. But.... I'm glad I've figured it out. Time to do a nandroid backup of this good 2.2 before i F it up again.

My best friend and I both had major issues with battery drain after the froyo update. I even had some other quirks that I fixed with a soft reset or two, but the battery was not acceptable. Followed EarlyMon's instructions to the letter with both our phones and no issues whatsoever and even better battery life. I liked my phone with 2.1 just fine, but now I like my phone even better with 2.2 working like a champ. Just thought I'd share to help encourage those who may still be on the fence of doing this fix. And major thanks to EarlyMon. We need to build a shrine for him!

I'm sorry to hear that. my phone has ben glitchles. i was an early unofficial updater. no problems. had to update to .6 with help from xda forums.... still no problems. i've seen the same problems from a few people, and the knee jerk reaction is to say something like you have just said.

have you tried any of the suggestions for fixing your froyo presented in this thread with easy links? i'm only asking because the blanket statement that it is not as good as 2.1 requires that you have never experienced froyo cleanly.

i'm convinced that if you try to remedy it, you will succeed. and if you do, you will be glad you did, because froyo is great.

a lot of people have put in COUNTLESS hours of volunteer work to provide you with some options. if you haven't given up, try them.

1st thing i would suggest is, don't try any method just willy nilly. i would say read the posts linked above (especially the link on EarlyMons topic "how to fix froyo""

this will allow you to begin to understand the how and why you COULD be experiencing problems.

after you get to know the issues better, you can decide how to proceed. ie: piecemeal, or en mass.

that is to say, trying one thing at a time to feel out the difference, or to cleanly restart from scratch with a froyo only stock phone. which would allow you to re add apps, slowly, determining the effects on performance of each add. and tweaking settings slowly in order to do the same.

this may seem daunting and leave you wondering "why is this necessary?"... but the open nature of our chosen platform allows for the drawback that not every app or service will work perfectly with each upgrade in the OS.

but let not your heart be troubled, because the user experience with an evo running froyo is UNMATCHED to date... when you get it all sailing along, this thing is just plain FUN TO USE!

EDIT* i just want to add, that sometimes, just the re install of an app, or an update of an app will have surprising results. even a simple battery pull could turn it around if what you say is true. that it is slow and glitchy. it's highly possible your remedy is not all that intensive!

I agree with you in the upper 90% range, but the parts I agree with I do so vociferously.

I have my write up on this very point later in that thread: Android is not fully mature where proper control of an update is concerned.

It's not a disk-based system, it's an embedded system and any number of unknown-to-the-mere-user cleanups are required following an update.

The part where I'd disagree is that this is a problem local to the 2.2 update. As I look back at the wildly divergent performance reports from day 6/4, and the varying complaints with the within-2.1 updates we received, I'd say this problem is simply Android specific without a further qualifier.

I'll only agree that the How-to fix is horrible in the sense that yes, no user should ever have to do the integration work themselves, and provisionally agree that it goes from a suitability problem into a sux problem when guys like you have taken a disciplined approach and have still had failure. While you're number, based upon my correspondence and open posts here, seems relatively small, when it's not pebkac, you're screwed.

Otherwise, the How-to tips are like democracy - it's the worst thing there is except for every other approach that we've tried.

Oh, and PS to isaaclim, many thanks for the props and kudos but it was a group effort, I just played game show host and did the write up. That advice is from the sweat and tears of a LOT of people pulling together.

Any advise on how to get my music to only pause or quiet when using Navigation. Right now as soon as the lady with the weird voice mispronounces the street i need to turn on in a quarter of a mile the music stops for good. I have to go back to my music player and press start again. And then the weird lady tells me i need to turn in 800ft and just like that the music is done again. By the time i switch back to music player and press play again the weird voiced lady tells me to turn now and then the music is gone again........ Oh what fun
