desperately need an upgrade from my G1

the problem is what to get.
first of all I'm still locked into at&t, so whatever I get has to be GSM.
I also obviously want an android.
I've had my G1 for quite a while now and the lag is becoming unbearable.
sure I'm rooted and have the thing running pretty fast, but I hate it when it has to load up the home screen again over and over again, the thing simply doesn't have enough memory.

I've been out of america for basically the whole summer so far and I haven't been keeping up with android in that time frame.

I'm looking into getting the Nexus one, but have there been any other phones that have come out that I should take a look at?
and no, I don't want anything like the backflip (I need google) and I'm not very interested in the cliq either. but I suppose even the mytouch would be an improvement

I'm willing to get it unlocked myself

This looks great. a nice phone just as powerful as the nexus in terms of ram and processor. and looks sleek and is already on at&t so that i won't have to get it unlocked. plus it's got 16gb built in storage.
I was a bit worried that any android phone coming to at&t would be like the backflip because of their contract with apple
as of right now this is at the top of my list

Get the captivate, not one thing has been a turn off for me with this phone since I got it a couple weeks ago. Go to the AT&T store and try out the one they have on display. Just that little time of playing around with the phone brought me over the decision threshold and I got the phone and haven't looked back since.

In short... Get it!

the captivate is the best, unless you want a functioning gps device. Mine doesn't work at all, and I'm not the only one.

I also heard that the mail app has problems too (not the gmail app). These are small issues which should be fixed in an upcoming update. The Evo had its share of problems too when it was first released, which have since been resolved.

thanks.
I'm a little annoyed about at&t's update policy right now. I'm not eligible so I'm gonna have to get it off ebay or some other way, but in the end it'll be cheaper since i won't have to get it unlocked and unlocked phone prices soar on ebay.

I'm really looking forward to getting this phone, thanks!

some small details I want a little more info on.
I wont be back in america till next week, so I'll start looking to buy it then.

my concerns:
Cnet says that they've removed the "install 3rd party apps" option?
I assume that this problem has already been fixed in a custom rom for root users, it doesn't seem like it would be to hard to do.
it also says "we wish at&t would stop restricting app access", so this phone doesn't have a full market?

another comment about it says that samsung duplicated the stock android apps with their own useless copies?
I suppose this is ok as long as they're duplicates and not replacements, but what apps are they?

note: I'm also looking into the htc aria which is also on at&t since I really like htc sense, but I think that it's probably going to lag alot on a device that cheap, but it probobly has the same limitations in features as the captivate being on at&t.

update:
I looked around on XDA developers and found that all of my concerns were fixable.
I'll probably get the captivate for it's power and storage space over the aria despite that I support HTC over Samsung any day. so unless price becomes a factor, I'm going with the captivate, which will probably have a sense rom coming for it eventually (if there isn't one out already)

thank you for you're help.
