Is THIS the reason some of you do not like the Captivate??

Because its something new?

For me, I work 60+ hrs a week , so I dont have alot of time to mess with my phone, ( Looking for programs, ways to DL movies, syncing contacts with gmail etc etc ) Im still a n00b and Ive had it for 2 weeks now, and still cant figure out how to sync my contacts messages, phone numbers etc to gmail.. It was soooo easy with the Iphone, I just took it for granted, SO like many others I will keep this phone, but as a newb to android and Anything but an Iphone in general its quite the learning curve..

But I think thats why Im having trouble liking the phone , because its new, its different and im not that tech savvy .. I think I need a few classroom lessons on how to use this thing :(

I'm sure that this is quite a bit of it.

I am coming from a WinMo, waiting for the Froyo release before I get the Captivate.

My Winmo phone broke, and as I waited for the Captivate, I decided to buy a used iPhone. After a week, I am lukewarm about it at best. I found that jailbreaking it was the only way that I could make it useful. It just seemed to make me take extra steps to do the things that WinMo could do in one click.

If I had never used WinMo, the iPhome would probably seem like the best thing in the world. Both of my kids think so. And until I started showing them some things that a jail broken phone could do, they didn't really understand what they were missing.

It really is what you get used to first. And none of them are really bad.

the reasons that some people dont like the captivate are the initial poor battery life, lag and the broken GPS

Well my GPS works OK.. I havent had any long load time or network issues, Other than my signal strength goes up and down like a yo-yo :) The battery life sucks, nomatter what I do , what launcher im using along with app killers etc .. But like I said in another thread.. Ill wait this out, as it is my first android phone, And If i dont like it, Ill use my moms upgrade ( she hasnt upgraded in 5 yrs ) to get an Iphone 4, or the newest droid .. The one coming out at the end of the year looks promising.. Front facing camera 8 MP, 1080p HDMI out and 2 Ghz CPU.. :)

Lack of apps and support from Samsung, as well as being an impulsive buy is more my reason...although Android's notification bar is downright Godly

Exactly it for me.. The sales guy got me hook line and sinker.. although the I4 has a cleaner screen and feels more solid with a few more hardware features, he got me to buy the captivate, on an impulse because my 2 yrs was up and he showed me all the tech savvy things it can do.. Prblem is.. Im computer illiterate lol

Battery is not an issue for me since I picked up 2 of the same Samsung batteries + charger for $11 from Ebay. I just carry one extra in my pocket whenever I go anywhere and I never have to worry about not being able to use my phone. GPS works okay for me most of the time as well, only once in a while it will be slow. Hopefully that will be fixed by Samsung in the next few months. Nice thing about Android are all the apps that allow you to customize your phone however you like.

Not only to mention being sort of locked in with Google apps, and if you remove any of them you risk breaking other apps on the device. I removed Gtalk and found myself being unable to download from the Android Marketplace. I had to re-flash my Captivate back to the factory standard. Now my GPS is acting a little worse than before the re-flash.

I think the computer illiterate and the busy-bodies are the main ones complaining. They want something to do something NOW, no objections. They don't want to THINK about syncing their movies and music, they just want it to DO IT.

Updates? No time, DO IT FOR ME.

Music? $1.00? Ok, whatever, put it on my phone for me, just DO IT.

GPS? I have to WAIT? I have to use a workaround? Bullcrap! I want GPS NOW, the iPhone 4 has it NOW, why can't I? Isn't this phone supposed to be better? GRAAAAHHHHH!!!!

Apple has always succeeded in making things stupid proof, which explains the widespread acceptance of a stupid-smartphone. The entire Mac, MacBook, iPod, etc. line has always been geared at looking stylish and being easy enough so people don't have to THINK. THIS IS WHY I DESPISE APPLE. PEOPLE LIKE THIS.

Android = power users
iOS = casual users

Different strokes for different folks.

I've fixed the lag problem with hacks and the GPS problem is the only problem remaining for me. Battery life is fine for me, I got 45 hours of battery time with moderate usage the other day. As long as the phone lasts a full 24 hours, I think its good to go.

Where you get this crap. I think it has to do with convenience of EXACTLY 1 program - anything that would work like itunes (for those that want it). Try listening. Those that returned it for something else, by and large, did so because they did not get what they/we paid for. Not because of the power versus casual user, not because of buyer's remorse.

Show me a thread - any of you, where someone suggested "this phone is crap, I hate it." EVERY SINGLE thread I read, infers, liked the phone, sucked having to take it back, but it did not work and I was not willing to risk the possibility - borne by history that MAYBE I'd have to stay with a phone that does not work properly for 12 to 18 months before I can ditch it.

THAT IS WHY PEOPLE exchanged or otherwise returned them - NO. OTHER. REASON.

Say what you will about Apple and Apple users (for the record, I don't own an iPhone or want one) but stating something like GPS and wanting it now is nonsense. There is a difference between working and non-working.

Users here are angry that GPS does not work. If you are buying a product and part of its functionality is not working, will you just wait for it to be fixed or go get the product that had it working from the start.

It's funny how many of the people backing Android and the Captivate are saying things as 'wait, they will fix it', 'it's not a big dead' but if the iPhone Antenna issue is brought up - 'Apple is evil!'.

Again, I do not have an iPhone and am planning on buying a Captivate. But if it comes down to a product that has many issues with no scheduled fix compared to a product that works almost perfectly without customization, as much as I don't want to say so, I would opt for the working product (as opposed to a product with random shut offs, poor battery life, non-working GPS and so on).

Its funny you say that but from an iphone user for the past several years, i find the captivate/android FAR easier to sync/manage contacts, load up movies, etc...

Dont get me wrong it has some shortcommings, but its funny that all the weakpoints for you are actually the strong points for me. I htink you just need to learn how to manage these things, it realy is easier with android.

Another reason why people are sketptical about the captivate is samsungs sketchy record

That's because Jobs told iphone owners that they need to hold their phone another way. What has Samsung officially said? Nothing. I'll take a nothing with the entire community banding together to fix an issue over an arrogant CEO anyday.

I still can't believe people don't have GPS at all. Does it take a couple of minutes to get a fix? Sure! Can you shorten that time by telling it to use "wireless networks" along with the GPS? Sure! Can you fire up another program such as GPS Test to see exactly what it's doing? Sure! If it's such a big issue then please, for the love of god, take the phone back and get an iphone. Your lack of patience and ability to think outside the box is not welcome in the Android community and you will constantly be frustrated if you decide to stay.

Also, you want to try a REAL headache? Go use a Windows Mobile 6 phone for a couple of months. They are absolute garbage through and through. But guess what? The WinMo dev community is probably twice the size of the Android and iOS communities combined and you can literally turn WinMo into anything your heart desires.

These Galaxy S phones will soon be on every major U.S. carrier. Samsung is putting everything they have into these things because it has to be a success for them. It's obvious because these are the BEST Android phones on the market right now. Can you imagine how amazing these things are going to be in 6 months?

The fact of the matter is that no one knows for sure if this GPS problem can or ever will be fixed because Samsung won't say a damn thing. Will I take a chance and gamble with my next phone for the next 2 years just to see what the hell samsung decides to do? NO.

All of what you mentioned...

You shouldn't have to do any of that. Having tested dozens of android devices and most recently the Evo, the second you turn on maps the phone knows where you are. The second you start driving you see yourself move on the map. The second you open up Google navigation it knows where to drive to and it will start to tell you.

But with the Captivate you get a 2400 meter circle that it thinks you are in. Then you wait in a parking lot for 5 minutes and it finds you. You start to drive and you never move on the map. It bounces all over the place. It flat out doesn't work!

Do I use GPS every second of the day? NO.
Do I want my GPS to work when I decide to use it once a day? YES!
Do I want my GPS to work without having to jump through hoops? YES!

If you don't care about having a functioning phone and rewarding Samsung for their lack of phone design and inability to communicate what the hell is going on then keep the phone. I will be returning mine and waiting to hear what happens.

If Samsung announces it's fixable I'll go right back out and buy the phone. If they never say anything, well then I'm not stuck with a phone that can't find me on a map. More and more apps these days require your location to give you information around you. If you want the full experience you need a phone that works.

Put it this way.. You go out and buy a TV and the worker tells you it is an HD tv, they all can do that these days. You buy your TV, take it home, and discover it doesn't do HD. You try to contact the company that sold it to you and they say they are looking into it. They dont' say they can or will fix it. They just say they are looking into and will let you know what they find out. Are you going to keep that TV? HELL NO. Same thing with this phone. I'm not waiting around to see what happens.

You need to think about what you are saying.
If you bought a new TV and the remote control or sound didn't work, wouldn't you expect it to be fixed?
If you bought a new car and the headlights or wipers didn't work, wouldn't you expect it to be fixed?

OF COURSE YOU WOULD.

That is the reason why people buy something new. You would never buy anything new knowing the first thing you have to do is fix it.

That's a terrible analogy.

A more accurate one would be if you had to wait 5 minutes for the component input on the TV to work. It's a great thing to have but how often do you really use it?

Your analogy would work if we were all using one of those Garmin GPS phones. Its main feature is supposed to be the GPS much like a HD TVs main feature would be high-definition video. However, on these phones GPS is not the main feature. It simply compliments all of the other features.

I can't argue with that. I thought that was pretty humorous as a non-iPhone user that a CEO can actually say something like that.

But as for GPS. Most people would not want to wait a few minutes for it to load or find a signal. Especially if it has to 'relocate' your position multiple times while driving.

That's a terrible analogy.

A more accurate one would be if you had to wait 5 minutes for the component input on the TV to work. It's a great thing to have but how often do you really use it?

And if that were the case, the TV would be going right back to the store (some still use Component! ;))
