Get the Desire now? Or HD later?

Hi guys, not-even-a-newbie here.

My phone's just about to die on me and I'm now thinking of getting an HTC Desire. If it were a few months back I'd pick it up in no time, but because of the rumoured Desire HD I'm now of two minds. So a few questions:

1. One of the issues I have is that the Desire only has an itty bitty amount of internal storage space compared to most contemporary Android phones and this worries me because even on my iTouch i have more than 1 gbs worth of apps. Will this become a problem later on?

2. Following on from no 1, I do know that Froyo allows A2SD but with all the problems it seems to be having is it actually worth updating to Froyo?

3. I want to use this phone for at least 2 years maybe even 3, is it already too late in the game to get a desire now? What with Gingerbread coming along and all that I guess the easiest way to gauge this is to ask how do Hero, Milestone or even G1 users feel about their phones a few years down the line. Anyone?

4. All this basically gets me to the final question. Should I wait for the Desire HD? It's massive screen, aluminium unibody and 8MP camera are a real turn on but they're just icing on the cake, not my priority: which is longevity.

Thanks in advance, guys.

The Desire HD seems to have largely the same specs as the HTC desire, just in a new body.

There will always be new phones coming out in the horizon, if you are looking for a larger screen and more internal memory, you may want to consider the Galaxy S even if it is a little more expensive.

..and if you wait for the HD, when it finally is in the market HTC will have let out a sneak peak of another expected product that you will be asking if you should also wait for that one.
Get the Desire, life is short.

Yes, yes. I know if I wait I'll keep on waiting. My main worry is longevity, as in how long can I use it for? I plan to buy a phone this quarter tho, so there is a deadline, as it were.

Yenzehn, what about the internal storage? I don't really like the Galaxy S, don't know why. It does have better hardware but I've had Samsung phones before and was always underwhelmed. I really want an HTC phone.

I agree with the earlier posters. I was initially peeved when, literally days after I got my Desire, info about the HD started leaking out but then I realised:

a) my old phone was so knackered I would never have managed with it until the HD put in an appearance

b) something may happen in the intervening time which would stop me buying such an expensive phone

c) I don't actually want a bigger screen and am not bothered about a better camera and everything else is pretty much the same as now (even 720p recording is available via Froyo).

Now I've seen what the HD looks like (an old iPhone that's eaten too many pies), I'm even more glad I got the current model.

Get the Desire unless a strong camera matters to you. I agree with the other dude, each HTC handset becomes obsolete like every 2 months cause they release new devices on a regular basis. The new HTC Desire HD (or HTC Ace as it is known) is to have an 8MP camera and 720P recording but thats not to say that the 5MP camera on the current Desire is crappy. The Desire has a good camera in my opinion and 720p recording will be supported with the release of 2.2 FroYo. It doesn't really matter since the Desire and Ace have fairly similar specs. The price will be pretty incredible for such a device too so I'd go for the Desire. The internal memory is no big whup, the rest of us manage. And you usually get a 4GB, if not 8GB, memory card in the box along with the phone when you purchase it so dont worry :)

Guys - can you please get into the habit of calling it the HTC Ace as it was named :p

And once again, go for the Desire. Some great value contracts available and I think 3.2" is big enough, let alone 3.7"

Unless you really have sight problems, the Desire is the best choice :D

In that case, shouldn't we be calling the Desire the HTC Bravo? :p I'm pretty sure the Ace is the pre-release name, with Desire HD likely to be the official release name.

If you want a 3.7" device, get the current Desire.

If you want a 4.3" device, get the Desire HD.

Most of the other specs are the same.

Ah, I didn't know that, I thought that the internal organs would be as different as the outside. I'd only hold out for the HD if it had more internal storage as well as a better CPU and more RAM. I guess my question(s) have been answered.

Thanks, guys.

Can't argue with this advice. To me, the Ace (I refuse to use the name 'Desire HD' as it makes out that the Desire isn't HD capable) is just meh. I'd take the Desire over it any day as I like my phone to actually fit in my pocket easily and having a slightly better camera doesn't win the deal for me either - if I want great pictures, I use my camera.

Just to add guys, do not be decived by the Megapixel Myth. Having more megapixels does not mean that your pictures will be better quality !!! It does however mean that you can blow them up larger but on the normal computer screen, you will most likely not notice the difference.
What matters most in photography is the cameras CMOS and the type of optics used. If the Desire HD has the same CMOS and optical lens as the normal Desire then you will NOT see significant difference in the pictures you take even tough the have added 3 more mega pixels.

Pro Tip : Sensors and sensitivity: making sense of the megapixel myth

Yup, basically the same but with a larger screen and more megapixels on the camera.

Disagree, The desires camera is actually pretty good. The 3mp extra will add very little, seriously, nothing like enough to base a purchase off.

Basically, if you want a larger screen wait, if not get the desire now. What would I do? Probably get the desire because i'm so impatient, although my final goal is a phone with a 4.3" screen.

Don't forget bigger pockets too. lol

A lot of people complain about battery life on the desire, think what battery life will be like on the hd with a bigger screen, also you will need more pocket space as the phone will be bigger too.

It's about the number of pixels, not the size of the screen.

Also, because it's bigger, it may have a bigger, better battery inside.

You sure? To keep the same perceived brightness from a larger area I'd think you'd need a larger total light output. Of course it could be dimmer...

Indeed - we don't know the full specs yet. As the OP's concern is longevity then as a rule you'd expect that the latest flagship is the best bet, though if size and camera Mpix turn out to be the only real differences this may not make much difference. But size matters too: if you have big hands this may be just the thing, but otherwise a phone that is not comfortable to use is a very bad investment.

In the end it's personal - if you intend to keep the phone for a few years, and think you might prefer the new beastie, then wait a little until we know more about it (but remember there will always be *something* round the corner). Right now the Desire's a fine phone, it has actually only been out a few months, and you can count on support from the dev community for some time to come, so I don't think it's a bad choice (but I would say that since I only bought mine a few weeks ago :)).
