cool.. I just want to know if this type of thing behooves me to do. All i want to do is tether wirelessly I use Launcher pro and that is the extent of customization I do to my evo lol. Is rooting a complicated process? I have read though most of the items but dont understand what kernals and ROMS are and that scares me especially if I am just trying to do one thing lol

Its not complicated at all. Its simple as downloading the exe, and connecting your Evo and then run the program. You don't have to know any root jargon or know how. There are many methods, but I'm like you and just want to root to enable wifi. This method is the best and easiet way to do so, plus your settings and data are kept intact.

No this is great news actually. Thanks for posting. Basically if your currently on 2.1 rooted using unrevoked and have not flashed the official or unofficial 2.2 then your all set! Once they release the new version of unrevoked, you root again using the new copy and according to them ANY OTA after that will be rooted.

This explains why they have the new tagline, "Your phone today, your phone tomorrow" also Unrevoked forever. I didn't understand why they were saying "forever" b/c after each OTA we loose root. But according to that post, once they release the new version, you'll always be ROOTED. Hence the Unrevoked Forever and your phone today is still your phone tomorrow. Nice find!!!

So as long as you haven't flashed a custom rom and currently using the stock ROM rooted using Unrevoked then we'll never have to worry about loosing root to any OTA's in the future. This will be amazing if they pull it off.

Same with me, don't understand the ROOT jargons but would love to have wifi tethering, which requires ROOT.

Would it be possible to go back to the original "UnRooted" state after ROOT, just in case and if so how? - Sorry this must have been answered somewhere before but feeling lazy to browse around all the threads. :)

haha, nah its fine. I'm not going to flame your butt like I've seen some people do just b/c your not sure or don't want to search. I'm the sameway sometimes. lol

According to what I've read (haven't tried), all you have to do is uninstall unrevoked and you go back to preroot/unrooted state. I know this has to be done anyway if you have to take your phone into Sprint.

you would need to download and run the latest update on your computer, hook up your phone, and run the .exe file. This will wipe your phone clean. basically bringing your phone like it was brand new.

okay so im one of the ones who got suckered into downloading the june ota update and i had simple root so currently i am 2.1 eclair with the june ota on my phone thus i am not rooted anymore. i have not done the 2.2 update from sprint. so i guess what my question narrows down to is this-if i download this unrevoked forever will it fix my inability to root 2.1? and if im understanding the info correctly, i will be able to download the official 2.2 update and not have to worry about not being able to root? basically will this UF help me in any way judging the current status of my phone?

Thanks for co-operating :) and thank you for your replies. Pardon me for being such a noob since I was on a super simple phone, which could only dial & text and then got mesmerized by EVO/Android.

This time I tried to look around for a tutorial on ROOT/ROM/Kernel's/other complicated terms :) but couldn't find it. Could someone please point me in the right direction for ROOT tutorials/guide for noobs? ;)

I thought phandroid had a guide but I dont see it. ppcgeeks.com has one, am I able to link over to another forum like that? lol
Thanks! That should get me started. There are so many options and ways to do it, it made me dizzy. I will have to read through some of them thoroughly. How did you/others Root their EVO? Which ROM/Kernel do folks around here have?
