Help How to fix Froyo or Gingerbread (or any rom update)

Guess what all! I have a question! Bet ya didn't see that one coming, lol. So after reading the comparisons between mybackupPro and Sprite backup apps, i gather that, these programs will only backup those 5-10 programs listed ? So it would not backup perhaps say Shazam, Urban Spoon, Call Tracker, Chrome2Phone, etc... ?

From what i understand, these programs are beneficial because they backup not only apps but your custom settings for your phone as listed in scudder's post ?

By the way. Thanks scudder! for looking all that information up on both the programs. It was really beneficial.

Earlymon,

so my phone has been unplugged for 14 hrs since last night. Is about 50% or a little more today with just some light use. A few texts, tried video calling a couple times but didn't work. played a couple of flash movies (no longer than 3 min total playing time. Is this considered good? It's certainly alot better than it has been but wondering if it can get better. My battery info says 38% of my battery is from cell standby?? But why?? isn't standby the time when your phone uses the least amount of battery? Phone idle was second at 25%. Why is it using so much power when doing nothing? Time withought a signal is 39% but i did do the cdma only trick.

I have the exact same problem. Honestly, I cannot recall for sure if this was the case before 2.2, but I don't think it was. I remember other applications being higher than phone idle and cell standby.

By the way, my battery life still seems better, but my "up time" and "awake time" are still identical. I know that wasn't the case before 2.2.

Sorry to not respond yet, I've in no way forgot about you.

As I mentioned previously, with my AppBrain fiasco the other day, I started getting your same symptoms.

I've got the benefit of being rooted and I'm going through full image restores of my phone trying to see if I can't find that last piece of missing info for those doing the factory reset, following all of the steps and still having issue.

In the meantime - a (very) few people have related that it took them a few times, repeating the process and factory resets, for things to stabilize for them.

If that's not an inconvenience, you might give that a go. I've no idea why once wouldn't suffice - but I always trust data over theory, so that's all I've got for you at present.

ALSO - please note that since you first wrote in, I've added a few steps to the Et Cetera section:

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks - ensure that "Enable always-on mobile data" is not enabled (not checked).

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Roaming -> Sprint only

Start with those, let me know if you even needed to change them or if so, did they help.

I am new to this awesome android world so spare me if Im not too technically inclined. I installed the Froyo 2.2 on my Evo yesterday and it looks like I am missing some of the new features. I have the flashlight, the application storage on sd option, the new camera rotation. I am missing the little things like the home screen shortcut buttons on the bottom of the screen. I cant link some of my contacts to the facebook accounts, I also did the linpack test and it was 34.96 mflops (most are getting 37) and the time was 2.4 (most was .15 sec) with a res at 5.68. the screens dont look any different from the old android version. I am missing the slide across unlock feature too. I dont have this jit manager either, maybe that is the function of settings->apps>manage applications. I also did a factory reset and did not get any additional stuff, I dont see any new widgets either.

Welcome to the forum!

First and foremost - never sweat the Linpack score. That's so overblown, it's not funny. It'll float up and down depending upon how much else your phone is busy doing. I installed a high-speed custom kernel this past week, all of my benchmarks shot up - and Linpack went down. So, honestly, that one's a serious don't-care.

Some of the confusion you're facing is that you're seeing HTC's Sense user interface rather than the stock Android 2.2 interface.

You can capture quite a bit of that stock behavior by trying out LauncherPro or the ADW launchers (how they got that name really, I'll never know). Look around in this forum, there's a good forum search tool for that, for more info on those. I happen to like Sense, so I'm not expert with those other launchers.

You might also find interesting -

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/146826-3d-gallery-now-available.html

And check out the Good and EVO site link referenced there, it'll give you some more advice on the stock launcher - and end up suggesting ADW, if I recall correctly.

Facebook is it's own beast and is integrated with Sense - you'll find lots of info on that in the forum as well.

Hope this helps.

Being that I am not as versed as some on the in and outs of these terms and steps. I am reading this post many times before I attempt to correct what little problems I have. The biggest being the EVO chewing on my battery like no other it wasn't this bad staight out of the box. I only have a handful of apps and all non essential things turned off. Anyway a Q to the OP. In step 3 you state download the tool used for backup I assume and we all know what happens when you do this but that you are refering to say astro if that is the one used as a file manager and did the backup listed in the step prior. Thanks and I'm sure I will have a couple more before I do this. I just have really bad luck when doing things like this LOL.

When your run ASTRO File Manager, tap Menu then Tools - backup/restore is under there.

So, if you've used that for backup, then after the reset, you'll have to download as an early part of your restore.

So - I think the answer to your question is yes.

Take your time, better to get it right than rush, ask away.

I have not updated yet and I'm scared to based on what I'm seeing. Since this is a "fix Froyo" thread I wanted to ask for your opinions: If you had it to do all over again would you still update to 2.2? Is it worth it at all? I love my phone now and don't want to lose my functionality. Is there anything wrong with not updating?

Also, I have seen some posts recommending waiting until there was a "patch." If I don't update now and a patch comes out will I have to update, THEN do the patch?

If I do decide to go for it, I will definitely follow the advice on this thread. It seems to be the best and most comprehensive. Thanks!

The patch was those of us who updated to a pre-release of Froyo first on 7/30 and through that weekend. Also known as the .3 to .6 patch, this applies to a relatively small portion of Evo owners.

There's nothing wrong with not updating - but for myself, I'm happy as a clam with Froyo and find it's an improvement.

When you update, it'll be in one step. The existing over the air (OTA) update works if you're at HTC version 1.47 - go to Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Software information and check out your Software number; if it begins with 1.47 you're ready to update to Android 2.2, HTC software number 3.26.651.6.

Hey EarlyMon,

I hate to do this to you again, sorry. If you could shed some light on this question I would appreciate greatly! Just wanted to make sure before I make a decision. Thanks again!

i dont mean to intercept...

im using appbrain, what fiasco? just point me to the link and ill smoke it over if there is a link...

So, I sign up for AppBrain for the first time the other day and install the app.

It jumps up and tells me I've got 8 or 9 updates pending. The Market had just moments before said I was up-to-date. I jump back to the Market, it says I have 8 or 9 now, so I back out of the Market, and decide to see what all of the shouting is about - and throw the update all via AppBrain.

When it's all done updating I've got icons that have gone stale - some have turned generic, some are left over - and instead of them making any sense - I ended up with a different Bubble level altogether - not from the same dev at all - and 4 other apps completely missing (not in /system/app at all), but with two of them showing their original icons.

So evidently the replace procedure was remove then install - and it did say that each app downloaded and installed, I watched their little progress bars.

And as an added bonus, a _boatload_ of my settings were redone - and then:
  • Wifi would no longer lock on, constant connect/disconnect
  • My battery indicator in the notifications bar showed full charge while I watched it lose 15% an hour - _idling_
  • My QuickDesk settings were completely scrambled
  • Half of my contacts were gone and by the time I'd discovered it, that had traveled upstream to Google and then downstream to my laptop

A .357 to my head would not induce me to ever try AppBrain again.

I was only doing it to check out the HP iPrint Photo app that one guy said he couldn't find in the Market, and I thought, hey, while I'm here, I'll see if this is as good as they say as yet another backup method.

:nono: :nono: :nono:

YMMV tho.

PS - HP iPrint Photo is just too cool.

PPS - I left out the parts where according to my system logs, GPS started turning itself on/off/on/off while 4G kept cycling looking for service - with 4G off the whole time.

I finally had to revert to an image restore and thank the heavens for root!

Sorry - thought that that was addressed.

People are glowing over both MyBackup Pro and Sprite.

In either case and in addition to whatever each might claim to do, simply back up all of your user apps with ASTRO File Manager so you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

That's my advice - I follow it myself, even though I have Titanium Backup (root) and it's given me no trouble.

The nice thing about Astro - the backups are .apk files that you can snag one at a time if you please and just install it.

That's how I got back my original Bubble program when that got tangled up recently.
