Yea you are supposed to hold it like this:

I would think it the aluminum would act like a heat sink and help it cool down faster or stay cool. I have no idea I'm no metallurgist

Try this...get an aluminum pan. Stick it on the stove top, over a low flame. Care to stick your hand on it?

It'd do a better job venting heat from the phone and battery...which is an issue if you're holding it.

Aluminum is a known material for acting as a heat sink (I.E. electric motors, video cards, RC car gas and electric motors etc.

Your example is direct heat, not what he is suggesting.

PS - You would not want to touch an aluminum heat sink either, it's job is to dissipate heat over a larger area.

Um...they're both "direct heat" (ie conduction, or forced convection). Just a lot Less heat. It's not going to burn you, but it can be very unpleasant. (alternative example, warm up a brick to 140 F (60 C) put that in the pan, and stick your hand underneath it)

You probably could minimize that effect, without excessively insulating the battery/phone by putting an air gap between the battery and the aluminum case (using just enough felt/foam to keep everything secure).

No question that it'd work as a heat sink (ie a device that efficiently transfers heat). I'm just saying that's not an entirely desirable property to have in a cell phone case.
