Is there such a file sync app?

I have a few MS-Word and MS-Excel files which I regularly update and copy to my Hero. Is there any file sync apps which can do the sync for me with a couple of clicks (meaning, I don't have to manually copy and transfer the files)? Thanks.

for simpler text documents gdocs works well to sync to google docs. Not sure how it does spreadsheets - google docs for spreadsheets looks cagey to me.

Ummm, I think michael meant that you used gdoc on your phone and Google Documents on your PC to establish a central repository where you sync both your PC and your phone to.

Which actually makes sense, if you think about it - if your phone breaks / is stolen, and you are not at home you stil lhave access to your docs....

2) to sync from sdcard/DCIM folder on phone to "My Pictures/Photo Sync" folder on PC.

The sync is via WiFi. It seems that you have to first hit on the START SYNC button on the PC and also the START SYNC button on the SK Sync Mobile to start a sync. In short, you have to initial from both sides (mobile/PC).

Make sure the IP address is correctly set. You set the IP address in the mobile side after getting the reading from the PC side. I left the port to the default 23456.

The sync is very smooth. The good thing is that the software will check for updates before it syncs the files. Unmodified files (since last update) is not synced.

I was so excited when you first mentioned SK Sync. I have actually researched 100 sync apps now and NOBODY does what i need - including SK Sync. Sure.. If you are on your own PC and happen to have a wireless connection and want to setup your router for port forwarding.... then MAYBE it's for you. I'll bet that 99% of the new Droid owners want what I want.

Why is this so frigg'n hard? We want a sync program that will let you select files anywhere on your PC or network, compare them to the image of that file on your Droid (etc.) and sync them. The pay programs out there (SugarSync, CompanionLink, etc.) are WAY overkill and too expensive. I don't mind paying about $10 for a simple sync program, but I have yet to find such a thing.

It looked like aFileSync was pretty close, but I can't get it to find my PC.
Handset Manager was looking really promising, but I can't find anyone that knows how to actually install it.
SyncBreeze is close, but it only wants to transfer entire directories at a time - not individual files.
GDocs intrigued me at first, but I need access to files across my company's network.
I though Motorola MediaDock was my solution, but that only syncs photos and music.
k-9 email is suppose to do something for me but I have yet to figure it out: do I email the files to myself?

I am trying to migrate from using a PalmPilot (m515) to the Droid. So, I'm quite spoiled with previous sync capabilities. I had note pad files and Documents To Go files - all 2-way updated with the press of one button. Doc To Go exists for Droid but it has no sync capabilities. Hundreds of note apps out there, some with sync, but most require you to use their servers for storage of the files.

I need PC to device sync (real automatic sync, not manual) over USB. Anybody using anything like this?

Yeah, I did - not what I need, but thanks.

It is like most of the "file-syncers" I've tested the last few weeks. They are really backup systems - meant for grabbing directories and replicating them on another device (like another computer or removable media). As such, it is very difficult for me to pick just one file out of a folder with 100 items in it, and that has sub-directories under it that I don't care about.

One of these have come closer to what I need - it's called BestSync2009. It's a little easier to select individual files (but still not as easy as I'd like it).

Be careful with SyncToy. It has trouble with large numbers of files and deep directories. I use Karen's Replicator for "that kind" of file synchronization.

I never had trouble with large numbers of files but it certainly does have problems with insanely long directories. (ie directories with over 256 characters).

I only ever encounter it on one or two badly named/organized files a year, so I just fix those.

I'll check out that link though, always good to have options, thanks. But I think the majority of people on this forum will find SyncToy very usable.

Is there any updates to this topic in the last year? I want to sync only a couple of excel files that reside on a server at my work. We use them for calendar and schedules, etc. A couple of other employees also access and update these excel files. I would like to be able to acces the files from droid, update it on droid and have it synced to pc or server at work when I return to work. Same for the other co workers... I see some people suggest using dropbox, but maybe there is a new simple sync app?

It doesn't get much simpler than Dropbox. Just put the files you want to sync in the Dropbox folder. When you save the file (on whatever device), the changes are written to the Dropbox server so that other devices will always get the latest version. I have 10 devices and I'd be lost without Dropbox.

Plus, it's free, up to a certain amount of storage.

Dropbox and Sugarsync both allow third parties to access and mod files in specific folders you designate. Works best when all parties have their own dropbox accounts. Once you share a folder with specific dropbox users its like all of you are accessing the same folder/files on a shared pc. Everyone stays sync'd.

Dropbox and Sugarsync are great for computers, but they don't download or sync anything to your android device. In the android device, the dropbox & sugarsync apps are basically just specialized web browsers, which is a bummer. I want to take photos and have them appear on the computer wirelessly. Then delete photos from the computer, and have them delete from the phone. Copy music in and out of a folder on my PC, and have it copied in and out of my phone automatically.

I've seen plenty of utilities which will upload photos etc from the phone after you tell them to. But nothing that will do automatic two-way live sync.

With dropbox you send and receive photos, both from android device and PC. Just when you want to download from PC to Phone you have to open up whichever dropbox folder you put it in, then LONG press and select download. BUT the files have to be in the dropbox folder. As far as uploading, I just use the "My Files" folder copy the image over to dropbox then upload. It took me awhile to get comfortable with this app, I sooo didn't understand it for awhile. You get 2gb free storage at dropbox..this is good for simple files or photos. You may opt to pay for more storage if your like a power user. Hope that helps

Sugarsync does two-way sync of any arbitrary folders of your choice. The only drawback is that it's not automatic. You have to launch the sugarsync app (even if it's already open) and respond "Yes" to the question, "Do you want to backup the new items to SugarSync?"
