There is a new 2.1 firmware I897UCJH2 available from samsung-firmware.webs.com for the captivate.

I have not tried this yet but some people have on the xda forums and claim it has improvements.

[STOCK ROM] I897UCJH2 (Captivate) - xda-developers

Have to use Odin to flash it.

Post your results if you are willing to try this!

EDIT: New JH3 can be found from the same website

Can't seem to get my hands on the file. Specifically, I can't download any of the three files noted in post #6 in the XDA thread.

Ditto.

All the instructions I find for managing firmware are cryptic at best.

Can anyone help me out with straight forward instructions on upgrading firmware. Couple of things that elude me: where to download the files,
what files to download, and this Odin thing? Where do you get it? It is only marginally clear that it is a Windows program, I believe. Is there an OS X and/or Linux version of Odin or are we stuck with having to use Windows to update firmware? Can you roll back to a prior version of firmware if you don't like the later versions?

Any help is going to be much appreciated by me. Thanks in advance.

Do we need to root the phone to get this update? Also, is it a samsung released firmware update? Can i hook my phone up to Kies and do the firmware update? I see lot of information on this thread but i don't understand any of 'em. Like, xda etc etc.

Assuming this is like any other update, you will flash with Odin. You do not need to be rooted, you just need to be able to boot into download mode (either using ADB or using the volume down and power button method)

What's adb?

adb = Android Debug Bridge ... If you install the Android SDK, it's a command line tool. Once your phone is connected you can type in 'ADB Reboot' and your phone will reboot, or 'ADB Reboot Download' and you phone will reboot into download mode. This is the preferred way to get to download mode as using the volume+power keys (hold down the down volume key, hold down power, release power once the phone is booting) seems to be a crap shoot as to if it will actually boot into download mode.

Of course there are all sorts of other things that ADB does, but for the purpose of this thread reboot is really the only command needed.

For those needing a more detailed walkthrough of how to do this:

  • Open Odin
  • Put phone in download mode (ADB or volume+power)
  • Connect phone to USB, then connect USB to computer
  • Odin should show that the device is connected
  • Add the PIT file in the pit location
  • check PDA, select I897UCJH2.tar
  • Click Start

If all goes well you will see a progress bar, then your phone will reboot after a while. This is all from memory, sorry if i forgot something.

Thank you. I am downloading the files from that crappy site right now, will give it a try later tonight after the painfully slow download.

Also, anyone know of an odin for OS X or Linux?
