Comparison Pandora One vs. Slacker Radio For Android

There is a question:"what music app should we choose or buy: Pandora or Slacker Radio?”.

What is Pandora? According to Wikipedia Pandora Radio is an automated music recommendation service. Users enter a song or artist that they enjoy, and the service responds by playing selections that are musically similar. Users provide feedback on approval or disapproval of individual songs, which Pandora takes into account for future selections. Once songs have been selected over time Pandora will create a play list based off of your personal music selection.

What is Slacker Radio? Slacker Radio is a very similar service to Pandora. According to Wikipedia Slacker is an interactive Internet Radio service, available in the US and Canada only. Listeners can access the service on the web, through mobile apps on multiple smartphones as well as on the Slacker Personal Radio Players and other devices. It allows users to create and share customized music stations starting with either Slacker’s presets or a list of artists.

Which one do you like? I read a lot of reviews on Pandora Radio. Personally I love Pandora Radio on my Android.

I have tried both and definitely prefer Slacker. Personally I like the music selection a little better, but that is a matter of genre and personal preference. But I pay for Slacker Plus and feel that you get a lot more with slacker plus.

Slacker plus you can cache music, no ads, unlimted song requests to build custom stations more easily, and you get news from ABC.

slacker's caching always breaks on my incredible. stations become uncached or constantly say they need to cache.

without that functionality, pandora is better. slacker is better at playing relevant music, but the sound quality without caching is not nearly as good as pandora's.

I used caching on my Droid and now my Droid X without problems, not sure why it wouldn't work on the incredible. Even without that I would still prefer Slacker for the other reasons I listed.

....i hate both of them...way too repetitive. pandora doesn't really support that many people that are into trance, liquid dnb, and other genres. i use last fm because the majority of the artists that i look up are always there...as apposed to "could not find artist" messages with other ones. and if they do example:

-i search for death metal
-a random slipknot song comes on

...simply because of that i uninstalled..they need to get their genres correct, first and foremost.

last.fm helps me sleep and finds soooo many artists that i've never even heard before

I have about 55 artists in my last.fm library but when I use last.fm on my DroidX i get repeats over and over of the ones i have hearted, very little new music comes my way! is it a glitch? I sometimes have to skip 10 songs in a row as they are just repeats of the same hearted songs I have chosen to heart and have already heard, any thoughts?

update, if I pick say "pearl jam radio" I get a nice mix of new content, if i pick "my library" which as I stated has over 55 artists, i get almost NO new content and it simply keeps playing previously 'loved' tracks.. any thoughts?

Of course these services are not for everyone (to each his own), but many people see these song suggestions as a plus. In your example, Slipknot may not be death metal, but it is still somewhat similar and something that Pandora/Slacker thinks you might like. If you don't like it just mark it and move on; its not perfect but it should quickly learn your tastes. Hey, at least it doesn't throw in a Lady Gaga song, right?

Anyway, I have been a long time Pandora One user and loved it (granted mainly because of PandoraJam for the mac). Now that I have my Droid X though, I really prefer the Slacker app over Pandora's. Well worth the $3.99/month to get the station caching as well as ad-free playback and unlimited skips. Overall, I like Slacker better because it offers so many more presets; it almost reminds me of satellite radio, only better since it is so customizable. I still use Pandora on my computer so I can rip the songs straight to iTunes (somebody tell me if there is something similar for Slacker), but for a mobile device I think Slacker wins hands down.
