Ok, I posted this on my Google Groups page where I was able to Tidy it up and update it easier.

Sources credited and applied.

I did this on 2 N1's. No wiping, no data loss, both T-Mobile with FRF91.

No data loss, no wipes, no nothing. The only reason you will have to wipe or anything is if you want to put a custom recovery on it and a custom ROM.

i was under the impression that you could just flash the original rom back onto the phone which undoes the rooting process?

Pretty much that's about it. This process of rooting though does not require you to unlock the boot loader, which, once unlocked, can't be re-locked.

I used the process yesterday, with Talderon's help who was very patient with me, to root my N1, now running Cyanogen.

Heh, and I am still on the clock, looks like a 22 hour day today... unless they can't get their routers upgraded, then I'll manage to get a few hours sleep...

As for the help, it was my pleasure to help. It's what I do... I was on the phone with a friend in Florida this morning helping him root his G1 and get Cyanogen on there... wow... took me way back with that one!

I am kicking myself that I didn't root earlier, but the fact that I waited and am now rooted without unlocking the Boot Loader, I am glad I waited.

I hear ya, rooting without unlocking is what pulled me over the edge as well.
And looks like I'll be running about the same setup as you soon, only with the Enom kernel then. Not to mimic you or anything, it just looks like the most appealing setup atm.
I'll probably mess around with more themes when I finally get this ROM flashed.

Btw, just wanna say that you're a very valuable member of this (-and the android) community. You've been a great help to me (and surely many others) quite a few times already.
So I guess I just wanted to properly thank you for being the helpful person you are, hope to see you around here (and there) for a long time to come
