Help Cant seem to get Voice Dialer app to do what I command it to do...

Every time I try and use the voice dialer app it never pulls what I want. Or, I have to tell it three time to pull a number, which usually ends up being wrong, too.

Am I doing something wrong here? If I want to call my friend X, I call call X...

is there a protocol I am not following? Is there another app that does what the voice dialer does, but better?

If you are going to use a name to call you need to say it like this:
"Call, <name>"

If you are going to use a number to call, you need to say it like this:
"Dial, 555 555 5555"

If you want to open an app on the phone you need to say:
"Open, <app name>"



And honestly, if you are in a noisy enviroment, youd probably be better off using the keypad for dialing. The mics on these EVOs are sensitive.

The problem is, it the voice dialer sucks. I stopped using it and hope there's better implementation in froyo or at least a good 3rd party app.

This may not apply to everyone, but once I got Google's Gesture Search (free, Market) I stopped using the Voice Dialer and never looked back.

Not a big help in the car, other than super-quick at a stop, but then with all of the road noise, Voice Dialer was no good in the car either.

Hopefully with froyo the Voice dialing from Bluetooth headset will be enabled. I'm sure it would help in the accuracy since the mike is much closer to your mouth.

Nah, it's got nothing to do with the mic -- I've used in a quiet room held to my face like I'm making a phone call, and it still can't figure out what I want. I speak exactly the same way three times and it will come up with different stuff every time. The translation software is just terrible. Like, why does it sit there waiting for input 5 seconds after I finished speaking? Someone just biffed this project.

It's still useless anyway, because instead of asking for confirmation by voice, it wants you to press a button on screen. Which means it's not actually hands free.

It's the only thing WinMo did that Android totally fails at.

I hated the original voice dialer and now I use Edwin from the app market - it is much better for me plus you can ask it other questions and get info like weather etc. And best of all, when I try to voice dial - it works.
Just thought I would add it works better for me than the original - still for me not as good as the one on my old touch pro (the only thing the touch pro did better)

I just downloaded Edwin this morning but didn't get a chance to play with it yet.

But yeah, Winmo voicedial was actually pretty good. It's the only thing from Winmo that I miss.

I've seen friends voicedial successfully over the years and never had it work for me - I bet now if I'd asked, maybe they'd have told me they were on WinMO.

My voice dialer never worked. When I say "Call Jane" it pulls up Janes home and work numbers as options even though her mobile number is set to default. I've never been able to get it to pull up her mobile number no matter what I do. It simply won't pull up the default number as an option. I quit trying a long time ago.

I can get the call and dial options to work but "Open, <app name>." Never works for me. I just opens up a google search for the app that I tried to open.

They really need to take from Apples page here. When I was deciding between the iPhone 3gs and android back a while ago (I chose android) one point that was awesome about the iPhone was its voice recognition. It is SPOT on and I TRIED to fool it (speaking fast, etc).

I really would like it to function because of all the cops down here cracking down on people texting. But, how do they know I am dialing and not texting if they see me on my phone... well they dont. They will just ticket me anyway.

There is another voice app called vlingo voice which I am now using in place of edwin.

Download the new Google Voice from the marketplace. In addition to a bunch of new voice search commands, it seems to work a lot better than the old voice dialer for calling contacts and phone numbers.

You guys need to go to the app market and download Vlingo! Do it now because its free and it works great! I guess since Google Voice Search just hit the market for free. Vlingo decided they wouldn't charge for their app so people could see the difference between the two apps. Vlingo will even read off your text messages and emails to you if you want. It will only open up stock apps but it knows what its doing. And it comes with its own keyboard. Download quickly folks!

Just try out the app. If you don't like it just uninstall. It has its own keyboard so you are not forced to use the stock keyboard with Google voice to text. The Vlingo keyboard will allow you to utilize Vlingo's voice to text. Its 10 times better. I played with the thing a lot yesterday. If you are playing with it a lot it will use some battery. But I will probably use it in the car a lot anyway when its plugged into a charger. I haven't looked to see if it affects my idling time.

Call this a hunch but the app utilizes the internet so you should see a battery drain when using the app. I think I dropped 25% after using the app for 2 hours. Which is less of a drop than a person would see from using the internet browser for 2 hours. Actually, if I'm on the internet using my browser I will lose 25% for every 1hr and 30mins of browsing on the internet.

Haven't used Edwin sorry. Only used Voice Dialer, Voice Search, and now Vlingo.
