Help Installing non market apps (.apk files)

I've found an app that is not on the market which i'd like to download but it is an .apk file. The site says to use HTC Sync which sounds easy on the HTC website but then says it's only available for Wildfire, not my Desire.

Is there any easy way to get these apps that are apk files onto my phone?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but am only really now getting to grips with what this little thing can do and boy am I impressed! Actually jumped for joy when my google calender and phone synched together without me doing ANYTHING!

Thanks for your help

Just open or download the file from the phone web browser.when the download is complete, drag down the notification bar and click on the file. It will automatically install. Of course, you will have had to enable installation of non-market apps in your settings.
