Droid 2? Competition?

The DROID 2 will without question out sell the EPIC. It will not even be close actually. The reason has nothing to do with the hardware of the phone. It is all about brand recognition and marketing. The commercials for the DROID X and DROID 2 are awesome. That "droid" sound and the red robot eye are fantastic examples of great marketing.

I have yet however to see a single commercial on the tv for the EPIC. All they have are those generic Galaxy S commercials. Why not an EPIC specific commercial from Sprint? I'm sure they will do like they did with the EVO and start running commercials AFTER the phone has been released. Ironic because with the EVO, no one could even get their hands on one for a whole month after it was released due to lack of inventory. So, all those advertising dollars were a complete waste.

Don't think so!! Maybe advertising might be better but spec wise, no deal! I bet it still gets more sells though, just because it's Droid

I'm personally giving a long hard look at both devices. Sprints inability to give a release date instills lack of confidence on my part. The main thing that's keeping me leaning towards Sprint is the monthly bill difference. The original price plus I'll get 25% off a month. If it weren't for that I would most likely have a Droid 2 reserved. Or be waiting for the R2-D2 edition.

There are Vibrant and Captivate specific commercials so I'm guessing there will be Epic Specific commercials too

Just got back from a brief test drive with a D2. Solid device. Nice and snappy performance wise. Screen seemed nice (as nice as the DX I had for a day). It switched to landscape quite quickly to allow for keyboard typing (which I REALLY liked). I didn't really spend enough time with it to get a full review.

I can say this. It's a GOOD thing that Sprint/Samsung announced the release date of the Epic today. I would have been hard pressed not to get a Droid 2 if there was no definitive release date on the Epic. I want a good keyboard on my next device. That's one of my main "must-have's".

The one thing I will say about the D2 is in typing I kept hitting the C when I would try to type D. The keyboard was quite cramped and didn't have much of a tactile feel to it. YMMV, just figured I'd share.

To many, Droid is the phone that has the "google thing on it." Also, I think Motorola has a better rep lately (no for me, but for others), and Verizon has more customers than Sprint, so the D2 will most definitely outsell the Epic. Of course, with Verizon having the Incredible and the DX out, the may cut into the Droid 2 sales, when the Droid came out, it was the ONLY good Verizon phone that wasn't a blackberry.

My local Verizon store did not expect to sell out of D2's. They sold out of X's and Dincs. Unfortunately I don't think the Droid 2 is that much more of a device to warrant huge sales.

The origional DROID is the #1 selling Android phone still despite all the hype of others, I have no doubt the DROID 2 will outsell the EPIC 4G. If Sprint allows this phone through QA without GPS being fixed their QA people should be terminated. They don't even need to find the issue ffs, it's all over the net with the Galaxy S, Captivate and Vibrant.

i agree...droid 2 will sell well. plus it has froyo. sammy will drag it's feet on froyo. but hopefully once epic gets froyo, it might be in even playing field. dunno how thin the epic is or how light it is. i'm not fond on how the d2 is pretty much the same dimension/weight as the old droid. the droid is a tad too thick and heavy for me. but great phone and dev community tho. not sure if d2 will follow as moto has prolly locked it like they did with Dx.at least for installing roms.

Why does everyone keep saying that samsung is going to take a long time getting 2.2 out? It was announced awhile back that Epic would be getting 2.2 in September.

Yes indeed!!!! :D

Not to mention that this thing will probably be rooted by the developers within a week after release. People like me (willing to root) will wait only a short period before actually having Foyo.

I currently have the Droid and it is rooted, overclocked and running like a charm. Gotta love the Android OS.

I very much doubt QA is involved in any GPS fix, that's all Samsung. It'll get fixed people just make too much of a minor problem, honestly I never use the GPS on my smartphones since I'm inside alot and searching for GPS signals kills the battery, I only turn it on whenever I need it and since I have a dedicated GPS in my car that's not too often. If this is the only problem this phone has I'll consider myself very fortunate.

I agree, the Droid 2 will outsell the Epic. However, I don't think it's marketing.

1. Sprint is a smaller network. Fewer customers; lower sales.
2. Sprint can't manage stock. Think Evo. Preorders for the Epic appear to be all used up in my area. Deja vu all over again. No phones, no sales.
3. Since Sprint can't stock phones they're gouging customers for the Epic to dampen demand. $249 was all it took to curb my enthusiasm.
4. Sprint is gouging on 4G. All Epic customers will have to have at least a $69.99 plan + $10 surcharge. I've tried and benchmarked Sprint 4G. It's not worth the premium yet. Higher price, lower demand. Simple economics.
5. Droid (Motorola) have a solid repudation in Android. Samsung? You're kidding me, right?
6. GPS glitch will cost Samsung some momentum.
