Root I'm A Total Noob With ?'s

Alright, so I've been readin my lil eyeballs out from sun up to sundown...I'm diggin this phone, had it for about a month now, brand new in box sent from Verizon...

I'm thinking of doing the Universal Eris Root For Dummies...for now though, I only want to root so I can install USB Tethering...no ROM installs for the time being.

So I was thinking since my phone is laggy because when I first got it everyone was like "oh, dl this app n that app and blah blah blah" now I've got all my apps narrowed down and deleted half of what I originally had, so I was going to do a factory reset first then sync my contacts and add the apps I actually use now, then was gonna do the Root For Dummies, but instead of flashing a ROM I just flash the engtools.zip correct?

I don't wanna mess anything up if I'm missing something here, my phone is my only source of internet so if I mess it up, then I'm lost with no source of info/help.

p.s. if anyone wants to link me to the engtools.zip dl and a USB tether guide, it's much appreciated, if not, I can search for that stuff myself

You don't need to be rooted for USB tether, only for the wireless tether. For usb tether you also have to download and install the driver for your PC/Mac. Otherwise, the Easytether (USB) app is free available on the Market.

Really? I've got pdanet currently and I was only aware of one other one and they're both trials and thought you had to root to get a free app...thought I'd start simple by rooting first then tinkering with things as well, but if I don't have to do any of that just yet, then might as well play it safe and keep readin for awhile.

Neither PDAnet nor Easytether requires root access.
You can get a lot of free apps withour root access.
Please google them..
I have used Easytether, it works fine and its free.

I know they don't need root access, I'm currently using PDAnet right now to type this out on my laptop, but from what I'm seeing, it's a 14 day trial that costs 30 bucks to continue using, and the Easytether is 10 bucks, I was under the impression, if you rooted the phone you could install a tether app or ROM with tethering, all for no cost at all?

I don't lnow about the pdanet, for the Easytether the only difference between the paid and the free version is that with the paid version you can access secured (https) sites as well.

Maybe there is a USB tether app for the rooted only that is free and full featured... I don't know.

Yeah, those two (unpaid versions) both deny https eventually, which is something I need access to.

I've read the droid 2.2 is wifi capable, but requires rooting, that's why I was thinking of just rooting and getting my phone setup for free net access, then doin some more reading on other things I'd like to change/modify.

I'm just on the 14day trial for pdanet so I thought I'd start simple and look up the basics, rooting, and figuring out how to keep my internet available, then spend some more weeks on here reading about other cool things to do with my phone.

No wonder that the wireless tether app shows the the battery temperature when it runs. People even recommend to remove the battery cover when wifi tethering for a longer time to avoid overheating.

What kind of battery temperature raise did you see with USB tether?

Well...my battery was gettin pretty warm, depends on how much downloading I'm doing...meaning pages and other, it seems it sits idle while I'm typing or reading, such as in this message? I could be wrong on that, but anyway...

My solution to keeping cool...I've got this small square water bottle, I fill it up with nice ice cold water and set my phone on it, the phone doesn't get as hot as when I'm playin any of the storm8 games or talking on the phone for a long time, I was worried at first about the temps because I know heat+electronics=disaster and these phones can get HOT, but that seemed to solve the heat problem

PDAnet and Easytether do not require root and have free trials that after the trial is up only block HTTPS sites. If you do actually root your phone. 2.2 based roms have both wireless tether and usb tether built in, and have no limitations on them.

Exactly...so, back to my original post, does everything sound correct and good to go or can anyone point me in the right direction...

I've read that hboot 1.49 can't be rooted, is that still current info because I'm also seeing threads implying otherwise, but none actually specifically SAY 1.49, they just say ALL

Your OP is on exactly the correct track (although it is "engtools3.zip", is it not?) for preserving your OS and settings while giving you a minimal set of root-privilege tools.

Eventually, you might want to replace the boot image (which includes the kernel), so that you can overclock - but that too does not require that you nuke your current OS and settings.

Awesome, thanks for the info, that's what I was wanting to know, if I can ask for some advice, which method would you recommend and I'm thinkin maybe I should go with a 2.2 ROM, but I want complete stock or as close as possible, which do you recommend for that? Thanks for your help!

Personally, I would then recommend:

Plain_JaneT2 V2.0

which I believe is a good first ROM for somebody who has just rooted, especially if you want as close to stock as possible.

Is that a 2.2 ROM? the benifits of usb/wifi tether coming stock with the 2.2 sounds like what I'm lookin for and wanting, also, which root tech ya think I should go with?

No it isn't. Plainjane is the almost the same as the stock 2.1 ROM, but with some modifications. 2.2 only comes with the stock Android (no SenseUI) appearance and apps, so its very different from stock. As far as I know, no one has ported SenseUI to 2.2 yet.

Alright, so what ROM would work best for me then? I like stock, but want the USB Tether at least and I'd like to get rid of 90% of the apps that come stock if possible, other than that, my requirements aren't much for now thanks for bein patient with me guys

XTRSense or XTRROM have wired tether and wireless tether apps included. I use XTRSense which pretty much looks like stock except 0 lag and has some cool additions.

Evil Eris 3.0 also has wired tether built into it. There is an EE 4.0 out now, but haven't tried it to see if it also has the built in wired tether. EE is pretty close to stock also, with a few minor visual tweaks.

I used EE 4.0 for awhile but had some problems with google maps and navigation. I highly recommend xtr4.0.4. Its fast, reliable, and a great everyday ROM.

+1 for XtrSense 4.0.5! My first ROM after rooting was PlainJane2 which is also a very good ROM and I had virtually no problems with it. I switched toda to XtrSense because of the great reviews I read about it. It does seem faster than PlainJane2--enough so that right now I'm not even overclocking it (which I did with PlainJane2). And, yes, as stated above, it supports both wireless and wired tethering.

I'm using the EStrongs file manager, and if I'm in /sdcard and go back one folder, there's a root folder there too, where do I need the ROM zip to be saved?

haha, that was my hunch...and I went on it, now I'm tryin to figure out the drivers for my dumb computer to make tethering work, neither wired or wireless seem to work...ohh if only my computer were smart like my phone ha...
