Help What am I looking at?

My friend dropped my Incredible yesterday and shattered the front screen. I got the phone the day it came out and must have gotten a piece of a good batch. I've had no problems and have loved the phone. Unfortunately, I don't have insurance...

What am I looking at here? A $500 dollar expense? The same $300 I paid for it? Are there any workarounds? What I did with my Omnia when it would mess up (not any physical damage) was wait for a Verizon OTA and force brick it so I could get a new one. Maybe when they bring Froyo I could do that??

Anybody who has experienced this, without insurance, what did you do? Or am I the only one stupid enough to not get insurance...

Thanks in advance...I'm devastated so any help is greatly appreciated

EDIT:
I found out HTC doesn't service their CDMA phones. A company called PCD does.

Call them to confirm (don't have the phone number) that they can repair what you think is wrong then...

Ship to:
555 Wireless Blvd
Hauppauge, NY 11788

Include:
-Name
-Address
-Summary of problem

Do Not Include:
-Battery
-Battery Door
-SD Card
-Case
-Etc

They will send an invoice, call them to charge to credit/debit over the phone, if not you can send payment by mail. Note: Pay over phone will get everything done faster.

I will update with pics when I get my phone back.

I dont think force bricking it when froyo officially drops is going to work as you stated your screen is smashed.. I would just pay to have HTC replace screen. It is just slightly more then you would have ended up paying as an insurance deductible. Good luck.

Yeah I figured, but it did work for 5 Omnia w/o insurance. But again, they didnt have physical damage I had just already bricked them flashing a ROM and blamed Verizon. One tech saw my lioryte lite ROM and asked about it. I said it was a battery saving upgrade Verizon offered...he believed me.

I'm calling HTC right now, I'll update about what I find out

Good luck, and glad to know there are options, the screen is precious

yeah and unfortunately for my ear, its sharp.

note to everyone who has or might crack their screens: do not use it often, i cut my ear on the glass and have had to add scotch tape to keep the glass on the phone and dulled

If you are not a renter, it might be covered under your homeowner's insurance.

A couple of years ago I dropped my LG Voyager (don't laugh) and cracked the screen. Like you, I didn't have insurance on it.

I went in to my local store and spoke (whined) to about 5 different people including a couple of managers. The second manager I spoke to said I could get a refurb'ed replacement for $50 - even though I didn't have insurance, so that's what I did.

That obviously doesn't address your concern that you might get a dud as a replacement, but it might be worth a trip to the store to see if they can help you out.

wow. I love it when people say "I blatantly did X action and then did what I had to do to get Verizon to help me". So honest. And folks wonder where values went...

back on topic: damage, as you've obviously pointed out, isn't covered by any "free" options. If HTC will replace the screen for a fee, then that would be the best bet. If for no other reason than the manufacturer doing it.

@ Higgins- I had the Voyager as well. For me, it was one of the best phones I've ever owned. The only problem I EVER had with it was when I had the software updated and it made the camera nearly unuseable.

@ OP why wouldn't you opt for insurance on a $600 phone? Yes it seems like a rip to some people, but what's the cost of peace of mind? I happily pay my $6/mo so I know I'm covered in the event of something happening. I'm not thrilled with the deductible part, but then who ever is???

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I have a joined plan with my mom thats tied into the cable/internet/home phone at her house. I dont want to add the cost onto that bill, even though I pay my own share.

I want an insurance that wont tack on to my verizon bill. Plus, I've never damaged a phone, and still havent. This was someone used my phone real quick and I didnt give him the "be careful, i would kill somebody over this phone" speech

Looks like your display is still fine and that it's just the digitizer that's busted up. As others have suggested, I'd give HTC a call and see how much it would cost to have them fix it. I'm not positive, but I think under that scenario it should still be under warranty.

If you decide they want too much and you're technically inclined you can check out this post on how to replace the digitizer yourself. It's not terribly difficult (imo...) to tear this phone down and get to the parts you need to replace. Just need some patience and somewhat steady hands. PM me if you decide to go this route, as I have a brand new digitizer I'd be happy to sell.

But, please, whatever you do, don't pass the costs of your misforture on to the rest of us that are longstanding, paying customers of VZW by "tricking" them to replace your phone for "free". You chose to own a phone without insurance, it broke, so now you must pay to get it fixed. End of story.

That's just what I was thinking. That friend needs to open their wallet not you.

He is. But i mean, i'm a tech junkie is a friend circle consisting of hippies. They are not tech savvy by any means. Plus this particular one is paying his way through his masters and is already so strapped for cash. I knew he would pay for it, even if it was $600. But i wasn't going to make him fork over the cash immediately, it wouldnt have been fair to him. its his fault for dropping it, but the phones he is used too can take drops from 6 feet versus the 6 inches that my phone fell.
