Root MoDaCo 2.9 or wait for HTC official eclair update?

Why don't you use nandroid backup?

Didn't say I didn't :D

Nandroid is not so good if you have lost one item and others have 'moved on'. More of a 'total disaster' recovery thing I believe.

I take a Nandroid backup every time I change ROM, Radio or Recovery but a Sprite backup is just the thing for recovering that accidently deleted wallpaper, file or (once it's working correctly) SMS.

Cheers

I have to recommend MoDaCo 2.9 as well. At the soonest, I'd expect an Android 2.0 update by Dec 11th, but it's probably still unlikely. Plus there's no guaranty that HTC will even include all of the features of 2.0.

I've upgraded to MCR 2.9, and I've already made use of several features it brings. For example, it now comes with Google Voice Search as well as the speech packages previously left out of the official ROMs.

Besides, if HTC's Eclair update comes out and looks worth while, you can always flash back to the official version.

You know, I've tried a couple of times to do this to my Hero, making the gold card and all that. The process always fails when the bootloader tries to load the new ROM at the very last step, yielding a message indicating version issue. However, the phone happily reverts everything back to the way it was.

*sigh*

Maybe you can try this method: http://androidforums.com/htc-hero/19660-guide-installing-modaco-custom-rom.html

I'm assuming you have an unlocked Hero, probably running the 2.73.405.5 ROM? I was running that exact same setup when I made the guide, so I'm certain it will work.

Also, make sure your Custom ROM isn't corrupt or incomplete.
