State of Confusion (FL too)
Hello...

So my gallery has the typical folders in it such as Camera shots and I am familiar with the option to turn on "Default Folders' such as My Favorites, All Photos, All Videos and All downloads. I also have a couple folders that I created and uploaded to the root directory of the SD card to be recognized and displayed by the Gallery.

For SOME REASON I have two OTHER folders that are found in my SD card that are also ANNOYINGLY showing up in my gallery. One is called "icons" with about 91 little...you guessed it, ICONS...and is associated with the Maps and My Maps app on my SD card in the path .../sdcard/maps/mymaps/icons/...

The other folder that showed up is "tmp" associated with the FreeTube app in the path .../sdcard/FreeTube/tmp/...

First WHY are these folders randomly and "without my asking" showing up in my Gallery app? Secondly, PLEASE tell me there is a way to get rid of them. I'm a bit annoyed that they are listed in folders in my Gallery App but the MUCH BIGGER ANNOYANCE is their inclusion in my slideshows...I see 91 stupid little map icons in my slideshows and screensavers!!

What's the fix??

THANKS!!

PS - NEVER MIND, SEE ABOVE.

You might try turning off the All Photos smart folder and see if it decides to stop scouring your /sdcard for everything it can find.

That's all I can think of right off.

re: the .nomedia suggestion...even if that is still an option (you said ignore)...I do NOT want to move the items from their current used locations (perhaps you realized that and said "NEVER MIND"??)

Secondly, ALL my Default Items checkboxes are OFF including the "All Photos" :-/

Other thoughts???

What sitlet and Mabster are saying is correct.

I was trying to say ignore my post - I didn't just remove it because I thought that would cause confusion (with the recent server hiccup) - but that was wrong - so it's outta here.

I added the no media file to my icon folders and went to make a shortcut. I browsed via gallery to see if they would show up and they didn't. What happened was worse! My screen started flickering and I got the sdcard not mounted error message! I immediately deleted the no media files and so far so good.

You must've typed something on the file. It should be entirely empty and take up 0 bytes.

The thing is, i'm on a Mac and I can't make a file from nothing. Is there a way to do this in OS X?

Update - see post 23 or 27 rather than my earlier advice, below.

Yes - you use the unix underpinnings of OS X and you'll be ok.

Plug your phone in and mount it as a disk drive so it shows up in the Finder.

OS X Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

This will open a window that you're going to type some simple commands into.

Follow my instructions _exactly_.

cd /Volumes

ls -lFa

(you'll now see a listing of of your iDisk (as applicable), your Mac HD, any CDs you have plugged in, etc, and - a name corresponding to _exactly_ the name you saw in the Finder for the SD card - I'm going to _pretend_ it's called sdcard, but below _replace_ "sdcard" with the ACTUAL name of your sdcard)

(now cd to the folder(s) you want, one at a time like this and I'll use scudder's examples: )

cd /Volumes/sdcard/maps/mymaps/icons

touch .nomedia

(if you want to verify that you've really created a zero-length file with this trick, get a listing of the filesets like this (notice those are both lowercase L chars there): )

ls -lFa

cd /Volumes/sdcard/somewhere/else/that/you/found/in/the/Finder (got the idea?)

touch .nomedia

The system is case sensitive - sdcard is NOT the same as SDCard.

You can actually type the first few letters of a folder and then _hit the tab key_ and if you're on the right track, the system will automagically auto-complete the folder name for you.

If you get stuck don't get frustrated, just describe the situation.

And take heart - a dotted file is a unix hidden file and Android processes are unix-based.

The above isn't a workaround - it's the canonically correct way to do this.

IMPORTANT - WHEN YOU'RE DONE, YOU NEED TO EXIT FROM THE TERMINAL - OR JUST ISSUE THIS COMMAND:

cd

OR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO UNMOUNT (EJECT) THE SD CARD IN THE FINDER.

Remember to eject the sd card from the Finder and wait for the notification to show SD card mounted and usb set to Charge Only before opening the Gallery again.

I'm not a Mac user so I don't know about OS X but you can download Astro File manager and do it from there.

ASTRO File Manager - Android app on AppBrain

I like your idea better because it's OS independent and pure Android - good for all.

But - I can't see how to do this in Astro - what am I missing?

Can you actually create a .nomedia file if you can't find one to copy?

TIA.

Earlymon, if I put
Code:
 cd /Volumes/HTC EVO/Icons
I get the error message: "-bash: cd: /volumes/htcevo1/icons: No such file or directory"

If I put
Code:
 cd /Volumes/HTCEVO/Icons
, I get the same error message.

When I "ls -lFa" I get this:

I second this. How is it done in Astro?

You can do this with EStrongs File Explorer, free in the Market.

Cruise to target dir, then Menu -> New -> File -> .nomedia -> Done

Works.

Besides, I don't look at ES File and Astro as either-or - I always keep both around because you never know (just like here).

Just 2 cents.

Do either -

cd /Volumes/HTC(tab)

and you'll see it auto-completes to /Volumes/HTC\ EVO ...

Or - try the EStrongs advice above and skip the unix pain.

(Or equivalent Astro advice - just because I couldn't find it right off doesn't mean it's not there, too.)

PS - Your folders look confusing enough for a unix newcomer - definitely use the EStrongs method - it'll be much cleaner.

Also note - you'll have to goto EStrongs settings to allow it to show you hidden files, so you can have that warm confidence that you got the file right where you want it.
