The phone has almost identical specs to an HTC desire. Total price is $261.34 including UPS shipping.

It is coming from Guandong province in the People's Republic of China.

I was ready to buy the Desire for $549.99 from but am tired of waiting for it to be restocked. Almost six weeks later and no phone in sight except from a few sketchy retailers.

I seem to remember when if something was made in Taiwan then it was cheap crap, but now a lot of the best electrical goods come from there.
HTC & Acer spring straight to mind.

And those are the companies people buy from. Buying from shabby backstreet manufacturer who probably bases his products on parts from the good companies that failed quality control is still a bad idea.

I agree there, but occasionally you can find an up & coming company among the dregs.
Although in those circumstances its advisable to do some serious research first, & then part with your readies.
More times than that people just see the price & think wow & fall into that old proverb about a fool & his money.

Don't pay any attention to the naysayers they're all just pissed that somebody might've gotten a quality phone for 1/3 the cost they paid. Most of their Droids (including mine) were built in China.

Let us know how your phone works out and where you purchased it. Good Luck!

Yes China does get picked to build a lot of these devices, using quality parts as wages are very low = higher profits.
The Chinese companies that build & sale there own products, can be a minefield of good & very poor quality products.
The moral is do your research before you buy, not jump straight in.

Built in China isn't the issue. Built from castoffs from the proper manufacturers, with almost no quality control, no customer service, and normally a warranty with so many holes in it it may as well not be there - THAT is the issue. ;)

Cheap and cheerful is an illusion - You'll only be cheerful till it breaks.

Well, I hope it works out for you.

Out of curiosity, what android OS does it come with? Will you get updates? What's the potential for programs running on it correctly as it isn't in the android developers kit for testing on? What kind of customer support will you get if things go wrong?

I know the specs may seem similar, but there's a reason its $300 cheaper and no doubt has sub par components. That's my opinion anyway.

I do hope it works for you though. Good luck.

On the topic of "non-Brand-names". I am currently on business in India and believe me when I say there is a choice of them here. "iPhone" with 64gig +SD+removable battery+5MP camera+video etc for $150. Let alone their own major brands known only to the surrounding areas. Phones that have 2x sim slots+2x sdcard+2 batteries of which either one can be swapped on the fly without switching the phone off and looks like similar to blackberry. Then don't forget the small mobile phone that doubles as a multifunction remote that can even function the AC in your room. Phone that is linked to your satellite service provider and your decoder so you can set anything to record from anywhere you have signal.

My point guys is that a lot of the innovations we see in new tech by popular brands have been developed and tested in the back alley shops by those engineers that may not have cut it in the big corporations.

Also get ready for UPS to hit you with a COD charge for import duty + administration fee (assuming you are in the UK it should be around
