Enable always-on mobile

I read that this will waste battery power. What does it do exactly. If you turn it off, what will happen. Wondering what the benefit of having it on is.

I do believe that is what lets your phone sync with your computer,when your using google calendar and contacts.I leave mine on,I have found other apps and setting run the battery down way waster than it does. hope that helps

i believe it actually keeps the 3g connection alive.

Neither answer is correct...I turned mine off and all of my applications still sync and update (e.g. google, weather, etc..). It's possible that it's feeding info to some apps in the background but I've yet to get an error message, relative to having it toggled off.

Additionally, it has definitely helped my battery life. I'm now getting a solid 24 hrs with moderate phone use. I actually had 10% residual charge ,this morning, after 36hrs.

I asked verizon tech support about the function of "always-on mobile" and he had no idea. Probably a question for HTC.

im sorry,i thought you was talking about having the mobile network connected.i think mobile network has to be enabled for it to sync automatically.not sure what always on mobile does because i have it shut off but my mobile network is enabled so it syncs automatically.

It was my understanding that shutting down the always-on mobile just allowed it to turn off when the phone went to sleep. It allows incoming, but doesn't send anything outgoing. I may be wrong, but that is the way I understand it.

yup I can confirm it does recieve notifications and updates. And it helps battery life alot to boot. Until I see any adverse impact on apps I am going to leave it off.

I had a friend send me a google talk message and i didn't get it until I turned that setting back on. Activesync email worked ok with it off though.

go to the home screen, then menu, then wireless controls, then mobile network settings "enable always on mobile" should be unchecked.

So, in other words, turning off "enable always on mobile" is functionally the same as killing your mobile connectivity before every time you hit the red sleep button? I've been doing that and have been looking for ways to turn mobile off when it's in sleep mode, as that seems like a huge battery drain.

I turned off the Mobile Network, and one thing i noticed was that i lost the 3G icon, which i guess makes sense. I'll report back with my findings on the battery life. I also placed the HTC Mobile Widget on my screen, easier to turn on/off.

just so you know the mobile network is not the same as a;ways on mobile.if you didnt know that.

Exactly...I think many people are confused by this and inadvertently are switching off their data (3G).

You need to access wireless controls-->mobile network settings-->always on mobile (toggle on/off).

I noticed that my 3g got turned off randomly as well.. I just turned it right back on and it was fine.. my battery has definitely been lasting longer since I have turned that off! Thanks for the advice!

There's been a few opinions but nothing concrete. What is the difference between turning off the mobile network and disabling the always on mobile option? Is it unnecessary to turn both off?

from what I can tell disabling always on mobile turns off the mobile network when the phone is sleeping. You can see this sometimes if you have widgets on the home screen for mobile network or wifi. There is a little lag as the phone wake up and you will see the widgets toggle back to on.

If you have apps running that are constantly updating and using the data network then turning 3g off is definitely going to save battery. If its not being used much and you are in a good 3g coverage area then it will probably not save much. In my experience with older phones if you drop out of data coverage and its still looking for a signal that tends to eat the battery.

Note that when you turn it off, it says "may affect some applications". Right now I'm not sure which those are...

I have the "always on mobile" off and the marketplace works fine.

i turn off the mobile network when i am not using the phone..........the battery will last 2 days like this. If i use it alot then 1 and a half. Like i said before when my battery gets to 15% it lasts for another 4-5 hours.

My battery is now closing in on 2 days including a partial spate of 100% awake time, without a charge.

This is with BT on when needed.

And also making calls, SMS, web, etc. Never turned the network off.

Device: HTC Inspire

I turned off the "background data" and "always on mobile" and the market place now notifies me that it requires background data, "Market needs background data to be enabled." The only options I have are to enable it or quit.

I re-enabled only background data and the Market now works, also verified that "always on mobile" is still turned off.

I'm going to try the "always on mobile" in the off state for a while, sounds like it might be a good solution for my usage habits anyway. I'd rather have the battery life.
