Root Froyo?

Hey everyone. Im new to android phones and im considering rooting my x. Sorry if this is totally a dumb question, but I was just wondering what happened when froyo comes out? Will i be getting the upgrade? Will the phone stay rooted if the update does download? Will i have to restore the phone in order to get the update? Thanks in advance for any help you all can give!

If you root, then get froyo you will lose root. If you remove programs off your phone you may not get the option to update unless you restore the files you deleted. Download the sbf file and rsd lite. That way if you do anything they will restore you to factory.

and to answer your question OP. Rooting will not keep you from getting the update unless, like previously stated you delete system apps. You will lose root, but the dev community has taken the locked bootloader of the X as call to arms if you will. They will get root back up and running once froyo gets here.

You're going to have much more in a few days. Birdman and crew have pretty much totally crack this thing. The only thing left is the kernel but I quote "We have high hopes of getting that also" Birdman is packing up the froyo from the developer phone for us to have something to use withn their recovery tool when it is released in a few days. So we should have froyo and root soon.

The way this worked with the first Droid was, if you were rooted then you were UNABLE to get OTA updates like froyo and such. You would never even get notification. Now if you were rooted and loaded a custom ROM that had like a prerelease froyo, the dev SHOULD be smart enough to include root access in that new custom rom so you wouldnt need to re-root. Thats how it worked with droid 1, but it really depends on the dev who makes the custom rom. But as far as rooting, then getting froyo from vzw over the air, I highly doubt that you will be able to upgrade now. And now that we are so close to getting it from VZW, and the fact that at this point there is NO need to root because you cant load a custom rom or kernel yet, then why root in the first place? Wait for froyo to drop, then wait until the devs can catch up to allow root and then we can really have fun with this phone. Thats my opinion in a nut shell.

Yes absolutely they were able. I was one of them. I have a droid, droid inc for my wife and now a new droid x. Im pretty sure that android 2.1 wheather you are using blur on it like the X or just the standard vanilla 2.1 on the droid, that you will not be able to get the update if you are rooted. I guess we will see.

thats where a lot of people get confused. Gaining root access is not the same as installing customer recoveries and ROMS. Root, the way it stands now on the X, should not prevent you from getting any future updates.

Yeah, since I'm betting you already know this , for the sake of those that don't, you actually have to do things to your phone to make the updates not come in (i.e., renaming the otacerts.zip file, deleting/renaming the SystemUpdater.apk).

The custom recovery just replaces the stock recovery partition with new code that allows you to do extra "goodies" like flash new ROMs, making Nandroid backups, etc. So, the custom recovery really doesn't interact or have anything to do with normal system operation. It only comes in to play when you actually boot into recovery.

I have been notified by a few Bugless Beast users that they have been receiving the OTA update notification and were wondering what to do. The reason for this is because Bugless Beast V0.4 is based on FRF84B, an earlier build than the new OTA update (FRG01B). A few months ago many of us would have simply renamed or removed otacerts.zip from /system/etc/security to block OTA updates but we quickly learned that this method drained battery life tremendously because it constantly caused the updated to redownload. The patch I will provide below will update the build keys and fingerprint to "trick" the system into thinking it is the latest build. Therefore no more OTA update notifications.

It doesn't totally apply to us because we aren't running custom ROMs...yet

Dude, that is very interesting and good to know...I had never heard that the otacerts.zip thing might be a battery drain issue...I'm pretty sure that a lot of the early Eris custom ROMs were built with the otacerts.zip file simply removed. Perhaps that explains some of the poor battery life on those ROMs. I had also not heard / know until recently about the SystemUpdate(r).apk (was it you that pointed this out in the OTA update thread? if so, thanks again for that).

Thanks! Picked it up on the morning of launch day, but keeping a low profile since I haven't rooted the "X" yet... I wanna see how the Froyo update affects root... Seems like its gonna be a race between Birdman/Koush and Motorola regarding recovery. My bet is that they won't close any (more) holes, but I'll feel better after 2.2 comes out and folks are still rooted (and when I can make a Nandroid backup ).

But you'll have to have root before you can use Nandroid. Birdman said you'll need root and busybox installed in /bin for their new recovery to install and run. They may package it all up to act like one things but basically it gets root, installs busybox and after reboot will give you an option to install recovery. At least that's what I got from their video.

Yeah, I've just been trying to be "safe" and not mess w/my new "toy" (as my wife calls it). My rooted Eris is now my backup "toy" and will allow me to wi-fi tether should the need arise. I came pretty close to rooting my "X" when the exploit was first published and I didn't 'cause the phone is already pretty awesome out-of-the-box. I just want to make sure that the first thing I do after rooting is make a Nandroid backup (safety net, ya know? ).
