there are just more things you can do with your phone that you couldnt do without root. although, beware, it voids your warranty. there is a great wireless tether app, screenshots, overclock, access to system files, etc...

I thought I read somewhere that rooting your phone will not void the warranty, but hacking the bootloader will? Since the Droid X root does not mess with the bootloader, I was hoping it would not void the warranty?

Rooting your Droid X voids your manufacturer's warranty with Motorola, as well as any extended warranties that you may have purchased with Verizon. When returning your device, or having it taken in to be serviced, you may want to un-root it before doing so.

Messing with the bootloader can, and most likely will, completely brick your device. It is encrypted and we are currently locked out from accessing it.

And what the heck is universal androot?? An application???

It's a 1-click root app but it doesn't affect the bootloader so it only works with some apps. I only used it to enable the Wireless Tether app and it also works with SetCPU. Unfotunately FRG22D disabled it, I'm awaiting an update to fix this. The app is not available on the market, you can find more info on this app here
