Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 2.2 update Petition

11700 people has signed it ...you are next...

To: Sony Ericsson We would like to suggest a path for the future development of the Sony Ericsson (Xperia X10, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro)

Some recent developments on the Android platform have made the current OS software 1.6 outdated. Most of the current products sold by your competitors (e.g HTC, Motorola and Samsung) are currently running on 2.1 and some are already getting the new OS software 2.2.

The OS software version 2.1 has been announced for the end of the current year to be available on your Xperia x10 line, but the 2.1 update will still put your product behind the competition since even older devices will be running OS software 2.2 at that time.

The hardware specification of the X10 line is clearly impressive and should in theory be able to be quite competitive. Sadly, the hardware is extremely limited by the software, preventing us users from being able to utilise the full capacity of your device. Furthermore we are unable to make most of the applications available to Android users, since the minimum requirement for many applications is version 2.1.

Wireless technology is an integral part of everyday life and we as the consumer would like to request the new Android OS version 2.2 to be implemented instead of the 2.1.

We believe it would serve Sony Ericsson's interest as well, making your product competitive and expend your user base. As you know the Android platform is rapidly growing and update is the key of that success.

We hope you will understand our concern and deman
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

I was told by a member of staff in a T-Mobile shop in Edinburgh (while collecting my wife's replacement X10, her old one stopped charging) that he had just spoken to the Sony Ericsson rep and the rep said the X10 was being upgraded to Froyo in a couple of months.
I was told this on Aug 17th, the staff member was a real Android geek and new what he was talking about.
Hopefully this is good news.

Sorry mate but utter rubbish, lol

My mum just rang Virgin to complain about her broadband and bugger me the rep has just come off the phone to Richard Branson who told her there will never be a problem again :D

I was just passing on what I was told in the shop.
Not sure if I'm supposed to be talking rubbish or the guy in the shop is but you really have a talent for being both insulting and an idiot in one post.

The SE rep is not a celebrity so calm down and take a deep breath and keep your sarcasm for people who actually do something bad to you not someone just passing on some pertinent information they heard that actually relates to this post.

But if you have some damning proof that proves that 2.2 isn't coming for the Xperia X10 why don't you just share it with everyone ?

I'm not saying that I don't believe an update (probably 2.1) will be hitting our phone but to take something a sales rep in a shop said as gospel is a little naive.

Sorry if you thought I was being too sarcastic, no offence meant, but just showing a funny example that sales reps say anything.

I bet if you walked in with a Vivaz the rep would of been a symbian geek. Also never come across shop staff that ever have the need to speak to SE direct, let alone one that works in development.

I spoke to the agent about Android development, which was something he did in his spare time like me so when I said he knew his stuff he really did know his stuff. This is a direct T-Mobile store and not an idiot-fest like Phones4U.

My wife and I have several phones from T-Mobile and see this guy quite a bit so I don't see why he would deliberately lie about it. He said he had asked why they were not updating to 2.2 and not 2.1 and the SE rep said they were going to jump 2.1 and go straight to 2.2.
I'm not saying it's gospel but adding up all I have said sounds promising to me which is why I posted it, it seemed more than just shop BS.

Maybe in future try to bear in mind that other posters here are both adults and able to work out if potential news is BS or not, and maybe don't launch into nasty sarcastic comments replying to people you don't know, assuming just makes an ass out of you.

Petition signed!

11812 with mine
but would be nice to have the source of your post, Gurba
a link or even a screenshot of the webpage**edit**

Android 2.1 for Xperia X10 in September - Multi-touch also on its way - Softpedia

also should fix the "lack of multi-touch" wich is software related and not hardware restrictions

Where in that article does it make any mention of FroYo or 2.2?

From the above linked article:
"The lack of multi-touch is not hardware-related, a source revealed, and an upcoming software update should enable users enjoy the feature. "

Who is this source they speak of? SE themselves have stated that the lack of MT support is hardware-related. This is just more rumor from random unnamed sources.

At no point have I made a sarcastic or nasty comment aimed directly at you !!!

You seemed offended so I apologised, but then after a rather sensible explanation you add childish remarks!

Chill out mate ;)

@olly1808 September is the last month of Q3, so it should start rolling out in September.

Think either the guy was having you on, or was mistaken. :D As in, from the horses mouth:
Sony Ericsson - Company - Pressreleases - Pressrelease - Pressreleaseoverview - Xperiax8pressreleasefinal-20100616 which says:

From Q3 2010 onwards, the Xperia™ X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro smartphones will be upgraded to run on the Android 2.1 operating system in selected markets. The Xperia™ X10’s position as the best multimedia Android smartphone will be strengthened through the addition of HD video recording as part of the same Q3 upgrade. A further upgrade to the Xperia™ X10 in Q4 will make it possible to connect wirelessly to and display content on your television and enhance the Timescape™ and Mediascape applications.

I'm guessing that the "selected markets" will be Japan and Europe, since they were the markets it came out on first (unless some kind person's going to tell me - politely - otherwise), so that's bad news for the US. Personally I think that once the darned phone companies (in my case Three) have finished "adding value" ( :( ) it'll be closer to the end of Q3, and maybe even Q4.

Getting back to the press release - so this means we get Eclair and then later an OTA update with the media stuff. Personally, I'm not bothered too much for the Timescape upgrade (Farcebook leaves me cold), but I'll be fascinated to see what "improvements" they can deliver for Mediascape. After all, Sony's a "media" company, so by rights they should be able to deliver a real tour de force in that area - if they feel so inclined! ;)

(PS I signed the petition a while ago, although I'd prefer to see 2.1 and then 2.2, rather than a potentially rash jump direct to 2.2)

I don't think a petition will have any effect on this at all. SE will release 2.1 and 2.2 when it's ready for the phone and that's the way it should be. If they release an upgrade with lots of bugs you guys will go ballistic.

Fact is, it shouldn't take 5 months to port their UI to Eclair in the first place. What, do they have a single developer working on this in his spare time?

SE pitched the X10 as their flagship Android phone, and it may be. But it can't compete with the competition's flagship phones (even on the day of it's release). Not because of hardware, but because SE has saddled it with an outdated OS that can't adequately show off what the hardware is capable of.
