Official Epic 4G Discussion Thread

This thread will be used for general questions or comments about the Epic that may not deserve their own thread. Also I'm not saying run around in your birthday suits but you can loosen your tie a little in here as well. Please keep forum rules in mind. Thanks!

Hey folks,

Now that SoFLO has been promoted to Moderator (congratz BTW), I will try to fill in the shoes he left as Guide. I will be in this forum primarily, mainly because my phone is the Epic 4G :0. So if anyone has any questions, requests, whatever that is Guide related, shoot me a message and I'll take care of it as best I can.

Thanks,

Adrift

*edit* By the way folks, this thread is now just for "General Discussion" everything else mentioned in the first post of this thread is being handled here -----> http://androidforums.com/samsung-ep...c-4g-guide-updated-12-47-cst-8-31-2010-a.html

Good morning!

Got my Epic yesterday, got up to speed (somewhat) last night. Last thing I did was set the alarm clock then went to bed. At 7:00, the alarm goes off - good. But forgot to turn off the alarm on the ol' Blackberry (who's battery has not died yet).

Turned off the alarm on the Epic. Got out of bed to turn off the Blackberry. Kept hitting the Dismiss button but it just kept ringing (what the?). Finally it stops. A minute later it starts again, and I still can't turn it off. By that time I was a little more awake and I remembered that the BB Curve is NOT A TOUCHSCREEN!!

I am geek when it comes to phones. I saw the Epic, and while I wasn't completely sold on TouchWiz the keyboard and SAMOLED screen had me thinking is the grass greener? I received the Epic last night,

The capacitive buttons are a joke, the back butting required you to press so hard that you almost break the glass. TW is nothing like Sense. Sense is absolutely the best UI out there hands down. The display is very nice, a bit more colorful than the EVO but kind of overrated. Keeping this review brief and to the point, the EVO is a much better phone. I would consider the EPIC to be more a mid level phone versus high end. I've never been impressed with Samsung phones and the same holds true for the EPIC.

My wife has the Evo and I have the Epic. So far I find things I like about both. I'd consider them both high end.

I have never had a smart phone before, but as a first experience, I'm sold on Android and the Epic. It's been tons of fun, and the level of customization and control you have is great.

However, there's a few things I'd like to modify or change.

1. When I get calls, I get this voice id for the caller and I'd like to turn it off or modify it. I think it's possible, but there are SO MANY settings controls, that, eh, I sort of can't find it.

2. Originally, when I had the alarm clock feature on and had the phone plugged in, I got a charging message that showed the percentage. For some reason, that stopped happening and I'd like to get that back, as well as be able to have more accuracy on the charging bar at the top of the screen.

Overall, I really love this new phone.

Here's where you turn it off: menu> settings> text-to-speech> uncheck "Speak Incoming CallerID"

Don't feel bad, took me half a day to turn mine off...

Hi All,

So this may be a realllllly dumb question, but how do you know when you have received a text message?
Is there a notification that will pop up on the screen? On my old phones, there was a * on my bb and a pop up with text message.

Also, is there a way to turn off the sound when i get a text while on the phone???

I appreciate any help!!

Thanks,

Wow I read some really good stuff here.
The Epic is a really awesome phone. Some people are bashing it because of the History of Samsung or they cant except change. Like the fact that it's different and has TouchWiz.
Do I want every android phone to have stock and sense? No
I personally think Sense needs a upgrade now to the UI.
It's no different then any other phone with it. Just a bigger screen now a days and faster.
But same UI look. It could use some new tweaks to the UI.
Because then the only difference would be the specs. I want the user experience to be varied as well. TouchWiz is not all that bad. Don't go with the bandwagon or past issues. It's always about now in this mobile game and right NOW samsung is doing well.
In this point of the game stock would of been nice, but even android itself is not fully matured.

The Galaxy S line was a new start for Samsung and they have done well. Has a few bugs but what phone doesn't?
It feels good in the hand, light weight for a physical keyboard phone, attractive device, and has nice specs. It's clearly a high end phone.
Epic and Evo are two of the best phones out.
Some of the reasons that people are choosing to dislike the phone or even worse bash it are not real reasons. Just going by what others said and never experienced it in person.
This wouldn't even be a 4G phone if it was all of what people said.
The 4G line is awesome.

All of the notifications are located in the left side of the status bar at the top of your screen. Here you will find notifications for text, email, voicemail, calendar, downloads-just about anything that you need to be notified about. Just place your finger over the status bar and slide down- you can access and manage the notifications from right there!

I cannot get my epic 4g that I just recieved today to autofocus... I would like to utilize the barcode scanning apps but without being able to focus in on the barcode this is not possible. Like I said it is brand new just activated today and downloaded with the official 2.2 froyo update. I am thinking it is something with the update that is preventing this, Can anyone advise?
