PingChat! FOR ANDROID! (BBM-ish app)

I just installed pingchat 2 on my old 3g iphone and it sends to my Incredible right away w/o any delay.

I have one thing that that's not good. On my wife's BB and on my iphone 3g both send full resolution photos, my Incredible is locked in to 640x480. While I'm not against limiting it some, locking it in at that resolution makes the pictures look like crap. Both my old 3g and my wife's bold's pictures look much better. Within the camera while trying to take a new picture, going to settings only shows the 640x480 as a selection.

P.S. had this installed since this morning. using System Panel showing CPU usage over the last 8h shows PingChat! at 9.7%(46min 25s) of CPU time, the next closest was System Processes at only 19min 49s, Market, 6m 48s, system at 6m 17sec. So it appears as though at least on android this may need to be optimized some.

I'm also having a lengthy delay receiving messages from an iPhone user. She receives my messages nearly instantly, but the return takes minutes to hours.

Also, when the messages finally do show up they do so all at once, and out of order.

Not sure if it's strictly a ping chat problem, but when I'm connected to wifi at work, anytime a message thread is opened the browser repeatedly overtakes the display with a page displaying "Ad_blocked". After a second it returns to the pingchat thread but it happens again in less than a second, making pingchat unusable. I re-verified that I don't have any ad-blockers installed. Ads show fine if I turn off wifi and there are no interruptions from the browser. Still the delay thing though!

Also I read in the app reviews that with Froyo this will work correctly but with prev. versions you will need to open the app to receive messages. Any truth to this?

Thanks for developing this for Android!

@punky there are push notifications. Are they not working for you currently?

They do work, relativey timely. But they seem to be pull-based. I check the usage stats for the app and they go up even though I haven't received or sent any pings. So the app seems to be polling in the background. And i'm sure its no

Also I thought for push notifications you need to register with Google's servers like chrome2phone does?

I had to uninstall this app as it wouldn't let my Incredible sleep after the most recent update... anyone else notice this? It was the only app I updated at the time and since I removed it my phone will now enter sleep mode again. I really hope all bugs get worked out and some of these updates are made b/c I would like to re-install this app.

Hey Enflick,

My friends and I just started using PingChat! yesterday after I read about it on one of the mobile blogs I surf. Absolutely wonderful app (especially since most of my friends don't have SMS plans, and I love the convenience of text messaging).

I've come across 2 small issues with the current build:

1. After linking a PingChat contact with my phonebook, if I tap "Open Contact" in PingChat, the app FCs on my Xperia X10. This may have to do with the fact I have deleted Timescape from my phone, which is known to cause some issues with the stock phonebook, but other apps don't seem to have this issue when doing the same.

2. Also, if I have PingChat open to a conversation in the foreground, and then my phone goes into standby, if I get a new message while the phone is in standby, when I unlock the phone the PingChat conversation will not have updated with the new message. Going back to the conversation list and then returning to the conversation does update it however.

I also sent you guys an email with some suggestions last night. Ideally, I'd love to see PingChat adopt many of the features of Handcent SMS.

Thanks for all the hard work!

Hi everyone,

I've noticed that since few day, I didn't received any notification on an openned current discussion.

In fact, when I do not have an open discussion with someone, notification arrive normaly without troubles. Then I do reply, and the contact re-reply and at this time I do not receive notification.
I have to go inside the discussion to see if there's a reply or not. Which is not usefull...

Does anyone facing same issue ?

I used to be a BB owner with two other friends of mine. We had an ongoing group chat - I left for Android, another guy left for the iPhone. So now we have three platforms. This is the first one that's almost as good as BBM for this chat situation. The only issue is that my buddy on the BB platform does not get push notifications. He has to constantly check the chat to see if there are updates. I'm sure this is the wrong forum, but does anyone have friends on the BB platform that use this and also get push notifications?

So how exactly does this work then?

If I was to download and install this, would I be able to send and receive messages to friends of mine who own a Blackberry and use BBM? Will I also be able to do the same with my iPhone using friends?

Or do they also need to download this "ping" app from the BB or Apple store?

Cheers.

Your BB friends need to download PingChat and so will your iPhone friends.
