how can i check for updated rom builds on htc hero with google (sprint)

im running Build Number "2.27.651.6 CL169236 release-keys"
thats what it says in the phone.

iv looked online and it says right here on the htc site on this link

ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero

that ROM version 2.73.405.5 is available. but when i type in my serial number to download it (at the bottom of that page) it says that i cant do it. is this update for the old white hero only? or is it for the new htc hero with google for sprint also? i have the new rounded one for sprint with google, and nowheres on the internet does it say if theres a difference, and if theres not then y cant i download the new rom update with my sn? will this update mess up my phone?

ok thanks a lot, i was nervous about updating because if in this case it was for the other phone only i didnt want to mess it up. and just out of curiosity, what is the difference between the htc hero, and the sprint version? arent they both htc heros?

Check sprints website for the updates. If you're on the 2.1 Android then you are up to date. The Build number you gave didn't give what version of Android you are running.

Difference between the Sprint Hero and the other Hero (both by HTC) is that sprint is a CDMA phone.

If you are on version 2.1 1 then you have the latest, go to settings/about phone/Software Updates/firmware version should say 2.1 update 1 then back out and click on system updates, there you can update your firmware if a new one comes out and it is OTA, you can update your profile which is good to do from time to time, update your PRL which is the preferred roaming location which it should update automatically but we all check it about once a week, and HTC SW updates that is if HTC releases new widget or updates then you can check that also once in a while

i am running 2.1 update 1, but i thought the firmware was different then roms, im a little new to this, and what is PRL? i always update it but is it only in the area around me? like if i drive a couple hours away should i update it to get the list from that area while im there for the day? or once updated is it the same no matter where i go? same with profile what does that update and when should it be done?

No need to update your prl just because you've moved a bit, when it has been updated you'll read about on this site. As for rom/software/firmware updates, unless you root and are prepared to flash custom roms, there will be none. HTC and Sprint gave up on supporting the Hero and wont be rolling out further updates.
