New Kies out today 18 August

Thanks for the heads up, but today is 17th, do you mean tomorrow? No updates showing up for me yet.

Oops - sorry, I meant the 17th - typo.

It is a full download, don't know if the installed version has detected it , as I don't have it installed at work

Support for Galaxy S SAMSUNG

It DOES now say there is a firmware update available. Will check how to backup apps then go for it.

Thanks stephen67 for your answer, it is exactly what I am seeing.
I am just glad to know that I am not the only one, so I know the problem is not on my side.
I had to update many "PC suite like" programs in the past, from Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Apple, RIM, LG, (and also Samsung), but it is the first time ever I am having such a headache to update one of these programs.

Maybe you are thinking of this thread?
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/150891-help-cannot-update-firmware-via-kies.html

The only mention of a firmware update in the current thread are these ones:

It DOES now say there is a firmware update available. Will check how to backup apps then go for it.

Edit: No firmware update for me. Still using JG4. But the "your phone's version cannot be updated" message has been changed to the more appropriate "your phone's version is the newest".

The new version I have just downloaded form the samsung site (link at top of thread) is

1.5.1_10083

no sign of any firmware update though. My handset is sim free/unlocked from factory

-------------------------------------

Ok - im confusted now.

Just been back surfing around the samsung site - now the screen is telling me that the Kies software was updated on the 18/08/10 (as opposed to the 17/08/10) but the version that it is offering me is 1.5.1.10074_2_6 which is the same version I downloaded last week!

I am new to smart phones and have the Galaxy S for just a week. Found out about Kies and although samsungmobile say its a 139MB download all I can get after a 4 hr download session is 89MB. When I try to execute the file it doesn't appear to do anything.

I'd be grateful for advice and suggestions or even better places to download from.

As I am also unable to get the internet I was expecting I guess I am going to a great reader of the forum for all the good advice I am sure has been offered to previous numpties like me.

Nice to join you happy people.

Peter:)

You might need to download it again :(
I will try to put the latest version on rapidshare, or anything similar.
IF I can download it in less than 4 hours :(

doesn't fix usb connection problem, still will not load my galaxy s, just get looping mtp application, although not as fast as before it looks like it is scanning and doesn't connect.

useless crap.
The looping mtp application thing is a known problem and solvable. You need to unmount and format your phone's internal SD card then reboot. Chances are you still won't be able to connect to Keis, but that one specific problem will be gone.
